Late season turkey, should I even bring a decoy?
« on: May 20, 2021, 02:17:43 PM »
I am pretty excited that I am finally making it out to NE WA for some turkey hunting tomorrow. I don't think that I have ever hunted so late in the spring. Better late than never I guess.  :chuckle:
Should I even bring a decoy? A hen or a jake decoy? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. -253shotgunner

I have killed turkeys this late with and without decoys, so I don't think there is any right answer.  If it were me, I'd probably use a lone hen, just in case some gobblers have been run around by a group of jakes and may shy off.  I use decoys more when my son is hunting with me to try and keep the turkeys attention on something other than him trying to get a shot, otherwise I rarely use one, although I usually have it in my vest.

I agree. Pack a hen and you can decide how you feel when you get over there. I always bring decoys when I hunt in the spring but rarely use them because I prefer to be mobile. I still like to have them so I can use them if I find a good spot. You'll never regret packing one but you will kick yourself if you decide to use it but chose to leave it home. Late season you are probably better off trying to locate gobblers and then working your way to it which requires covering a lot of ground.

I don't think it hurts to at least have it in the truck.
And make the decision to pack with ya when your on the hunt.

I battled a higher elevation pressured bird last night and after over an hour of silence by us both, he came to within 100 yards silent. One of the only times I left the decoy I'm the truck. I have a feeling if he saw what he wanted, he would have came in. After a few minutes of him looking around he started to walk back the other direction. I gave a super soft yelp and he picked up the pace. Gotta love it.

Decoys are never “needed” but if I was going to carry one it would be a hen.

The push seems to be over, 9 toms together yesterday.  Bring the decoy anyway, they are still turkeys!!

I'd bring a hen decoy with me, not just in the truck
