i wouldnt get one older then 97-98. in 97 they changed some fule maping and programed the ecu alittle bit better. i would also stay away from the 05-early 07. those trucks have frame issues. ive seen a few of those trucks where the motor mount will tear away from the frame. i havent herd any real complaints about the 3rd gen tacomas. they are not a full size and they are made out of plastic and pop cans. how ever you can get away with towing most things. now the 1st gen tundra is where i would look if you needed somthing alittle more beefy. The 4.8 v8 is a milllion mile motor and the transmission they put in them is a beefy sob.

What?

The motor has no bottom end power. The transmission is constantly hunting for a gear. Many came low on transmission fluid, which required a manual check by the dealer due to its sealed unit, which required them to have it for half the day. And many TSBs for the transmission as they were trying to figure it out for years, not just the first year.

Many people are regearing it or getting the after market program to give it some usable power.

again. no real complaints. no power in the bottom end is perception on how the power hits. the 3.5 has alot of power and gets pretty good mpg for the amount of power it makes. if you want bottom end buy a 2nd gen or get a Colorado with the diesel . Toyota owned up to the low fluid and the shifting issues. then again the trans "searching for gears" isnt realy an issue for most people. show me these trucks blowing head gaskets, burring up a gear, rear end blowing up, or the frame coming apart and we will have real issues.

I had a 4.7 2007 Tundra and it was a great truck.
