South Sound Crab
« on: May 30, 2021, 04:18:59 PM »
With the efficiency of the WDFW web page I just can’t figure out if there will be a crab season in the south sound this year? Anyone hear any grumblings about a crab season?

Area 11 or 13

I’ve heard nothing!  I’m not optimistic, maybe a short season for 11.

I’m sure 13 is gone forever. I was thinking this morning it might be time to sell the pots. I never had issues with dungies.

I’d say both gone forever after talks with biologists and have been thinking same thing as above post time to sell the pots

They don’t think we are smart enough to tell the difference.

There will not be a crab season down here! The WDFW miss managed this fishery on another level and it’ll take years to come back to anything close to what it was!

Where we use to go in area 13 we only got red rocks, and they were huge and usually 12 plus per pot per pull.  Best one was right at 8"

My statement is based on a conversation as well.

I then pointed out that we have several different species of salmon and we seem to do ok identifying those….. All I got was a blank look.

Crab has to be the worst regarding regulation following.  Just go to any dock and watch, it’s mind blowing they almost never patrol there.

I assume it’s similar with boats, plenty of people crab that don’t fish or study regulations.

How long does it take for those South Sound Crabs to come back? Is it over fishing?

All you have to do is run from Nisqually to Zittles about 40 days before the typical sport opener and you will see why we don’t get a season. Commercial pots strung out every couple hundred feet for miles. Last time I was out there (a couple of years ago) they all followed the 150’ line.
