Other than needing a different bolt and barrel you should be good to go. I personally don't own a Grendel but have heard nothing but good things about them from guys I know hammering pigs in Texas.

Standard mag holds 26 instead of 30 rds but that's okay

As far as finding factory ammo I mean good luck in this era for now on any chambering.

Components might be your best bet for now

Btw this is if you're going the AR route

Buy a good barrel please

No ammo or components available right now otherwise it’s an awesome round. I’ve had one built for 6 months without a round down the pipe.

I love me some grendel! One of my favorite guns and one of the best ar15 cartridges imho. I have taken plenty of coyotes and a few big game animals with the 6.5G.
Ammo for anything is crazy right now. Reloading stuff is starting to pop back up. Hoping it gets better soon but you can still find anything right now. Just got to have deep pockets to be able to buy it or get super lucky at a local store that isn’t gouging.

Fun little round. AR's are kind of boring in my opinion but get a Grendel in a bolt gun and I get a bit more excited. As has been stated, id find ammo or components before I started buy the gun parts and as Mike stated, don't go cheap on your barrel. It's possible to get a really good cheap barrel that shoots great but you can also get exactly what you paid for  :chuckle:

I built one for my daughter a couple years ago. All Aero parts with a faxon barrel. She took her first deer with it when she was 9. I use it a ton to coyote hunt in the winter.

I put a Gendel AR together and I just get a lot of joy out of shooting it.

Its just plain fun.

I bought a cheap BCA barrel.   Returned it for an issue.  They replaced it and the new barrel shoot great.

Unless your made out of money, I suggest you look at the LaRue AR trigger.  Usually around $89.      A million times better than a mil spec trigger.  You can buy $300 triggers but I personally think the LaRue gets you 95% of the trigger for 30% of the cost.

I think trigger gets you your best accuracy improvement.

P.s.every real American needs at least one Grendel AR.   8)

+1 for LaRue and +1 for being a good American :chuckle:

Pretty budget dependent.

One of my sons was just talking about putting one together for around$700 including larue trigger, bca upper and I forget which lower .

If I were looking for a new barrel it would either be a Bartlein or Krieger but any of the top tier barrel companies that make a 6.5 Grendel AR barrel will serve you well.

I cobbled this together a few years ago.

I always thought side chargers worked pretty good.

I've thought about the grendel ,6 arc, and some others.
But intell this ammo situation changes ,have just not felt the need to buy any new barrels or new ar builds.

Do have a 25-223 with super firecracker loads that I crono at 2865 fps.

Just not feeling the new build thing with the ammo shortage.
Have a co-worker friend that just built a grendel and all he could find was two boxes of ammo and has only fired it like five shots.
So I'm just gonna say Goodluck.👌👌👌👌

Thank you all for the info and advice. Any barrel manufacturer recommendations would be appreciated.

Mine is a BHW, which was acquired by Columbia River Arms. I don't know their product but mine is a sweet barrel, 24" with a 3" break. If you get one and need the dyes for reloading, I have a set that I haven't used.

6.5 CM will be my next build after this 6.5 GR. I seem to like shooting both.

I'm still a fan of Blackout.

Grendel has the edge on stats but if you really want to push out on range then you should use a bolt or AR-10. A Wally World 6.5 Creedmoor will smoke them all on retained energy.

For west side deer I think Blackout is the way to go. The build/ammo costs are a lot lower and you can switch to 223 with a barrel change.

East side has a lot more open country. I'd still use a bolt unless I was varmint hunting.

So I think it depends on where you are and what you are hunting. They are all fine though, just don't use the grenade sized calibers.

My son loved his Blackout. I never got to shoot it but looking at stats, it's a viable option for a build as well.
