Finally after 16 years drew a buck tag. Weird thing is it was my second choice.  Somewhat familiar with the area and what to expect but any intel would be much appreciated.

Lucky draw, that is a good tag to get.  Congrats!!!  Some really big deer have been killed on that tag.

In my opinion no, I wouldn’t even consider it.  Way better access via the road system.

Chains chains chains. Those roads can get sketchy with just rain. add some snow and ice woooo buddy chains for all 4 is the best advice i can give

great draw. that unit i would have to rank in my top five for being able to get a once in a lifetime buck. if the weather turns and the deer hit rut you better give your buddy the ammo and you carry the gun. be ready to pass on some nice bucks. i would stick to the roads rather than try boating. first is this lake is unforgiving. your unit boarders the straights as we call it. its the part of the lake that can be dead calm one min and 6ft white caps the next. second is unless your a mountain goat its all straight up and i mean straight up. you better plan on some scouting trips too. the unit has two ways on getting into it. shady pass rd from the entiat side and 25 mile creek from the other. shady pass is at 6600 to 6700 ft so November will be interesting to see if you can make it. that area is a big migration route and is a staging area for when the snows get deep. the deer will hang in the upper basins and eventually migrate down into the lower entait valley or along the south shore of the lake. during modern season a lot of pressure is on the Chesapeake saddle , junior point, and big hill. this hunt will all depend on rut and weather. the worse the weather and the rut going on and it will be absolutely nuts. good luck and keep us up to date.

I love that area, you will have a good hunt. Some of the biggest bucks I've ever laid eyes on have been in that neck of the woods.

So looks like the whole unit is on fire. At what point do I throw in the towel and get points restored? Can't get into 90 percent of the unit as of today. Know it's a migration hunt but thinking if it hasn't greened up by Nov then deer won't hold in there. Thoughts?

They've got a good handle on that fire and it is nowhere close to the whole unit. If I were you I'd have full intentions of hunting that tag and not even have the thought of giving it back unless things are way worse much much closer to your hunt dates but thats me...

The whole unit is not on fire, matter of fact most of the unit didn't get touched....especially the side of the unit you need to hunt with that tag.  No way I would give that tag back this year.

A ton of deer move down in the winter and they don't know it has been on fire... keep your tag

Make sure u have good glass set up.  If u can hit a paper plate at 600 yards u will have a better chance at getting a trophy buck then not getting a trophy buck. Even if ur a mt goat and very good shape I would still drive and glass until I see a 170+ minimum.  If u got at least 5 days and drive the roads with good glass and r a good shot u will get a nice buck for sure just hold out. Congratulations

This is the link for information on the Twentyfive Mile fire, which has daily updates. Also, you can see from the fire map how much of the unit is affected (and the roads). Fire activity should be done by mid October if normal wet weather comes in. That should give time for scouting before the season opens. Good luck.

Pretty much all of the roads to access Slide Ridge are closed. I went up there to try and check a trail camera and talked to some of the guys working. They're doing tons of road work and have closed a lot of the roads with the fire as an excuse. They've got BIIIIIGGG trucks trafficking those roads and they're grading the roads. Don't be a dumb a$$ and drive around a sign, because they're all watching and radio'ing to each other of people ignoring the signs and you'll put yourself and a truck in a bad situation.

The guy said that they're always headed out around 5-6pm each night so you could theoretically get close to seeing some evening game.

He said they're planning on being done and opening up the North side of the Chelan mountains at the end of October. The fire is fully contained, but it's still burning, too. Rough timing, for sure. Take that info for whatever it's worth to ya.

Hard to tell from angle, but roman nose bucks have a huge bump in between eyes and actual nose on the top of snout. It is really pronounced on old bucks. Almost looks like they have a wound or cartilage built up under skin on bridge of nose bone. The scull looks normal when you skin them out. The bucks I have harvested with a roman nose have gotten completely ground into hamburger/peperoni, as they weren't good meat from age.

We didn’t see a whole lot of people burn turned a lot of people away! Daughter was having pains already 2 days into it so left the buck choice up to her. she was extremely happy with this Buck. Just proud that she wanted to hunt while being 8 1/2 months pregnant. Not many would do that! Wanttohuntmore I guess the top was a sh$tshow when they did open road and always enjoy skyvalhunter’s experience 🤘🏻Son got one as well during modern. Had to find a different route in with roads being closed
