They're popular for training and field trials. Not uncommon to see where I live.

There were a couple dozen out of Oakville off S Bank Rd. a few years ago where I use to haul hay. Probably escapees.

Pointer clubs release many at once for trials. Plenty get released by individuals as well. They don't last long, but make for good training behind other folks and their dogs.

The same with Bob White quail. We have a few around  the place. They get released for training.

Someone posted a picture of a chukar on the Nextdoor App in Auburn yesterday, probably the same one! It's amazing what people respond with saying what it is, when they literally have the internet at their fingertips! No, its not a quail...

Now that's pretty darn funny.

Now that we're on game bird topics on the West side.  Anyone have any experience at raising game birds like Mt/Valley Quail in support of WDFW?  Does it take a special license and or approval of your site to start up something like that?  Reason I'm asking is due to the low numbers of Mt Quail in the state and wondering if I could help the cause or is it just too hard for small fish to get in the game?

There was a time- late 70's or early 80's I'd guess- that they were releasing chukar at west-side WDFW release areas. IIRC it didn't last more than a year or two.

The problem is that released quail RARELY add supplement to the population. Most die within 2 weeks of being released. To support quail, you have to create or improve habitat.

A few years ago my wife and I pulled into our driveway (we lived in Bothell at the time)

The neighbors ran up excitedly and said there was a large parrot in out backyard.

Having no idea what to expect we cautiously went into the backyard. These were the same neighbors who put "our" dog into our backyard a few months earlisr (problem was our dogs are indoor dogs and this was someone elses dog!  Good intentions though)   No bird visable.  We walked in a few more feet and a rooster pheasant sprung from our ivy!

I remember hunting released chukar in a large clearcut near Tenino. Early 80s maybe. Big Sam, our spaniel, caught most of our limits.

Wonder, I have raised gamebirds in western WA for 20 years or so, mountain quail being by far my favorite quail. I would gladly discuss this with you and help in any way possible! That said out WDFW is NOT AT ALL a fan or supporter of releasing any animals to supplement any populations. I sold several pairs of mountains to a guy in Idaho many years ago. The Idaho game dept. not only tested his birds to ensure they were disease free, they gave him multiple locations where they had studied for prime habitat for release!! 
To sell gamebirds in WA you are required to be a licensed gamefarm (pretty easy process, just takes a little time and $$). To release there are tests that must be done to ensure the birds are disease free.  Again, not a huge deal just takes money and some time with one of the state veterinarians. I have all my birds tested just to ensure that they are disease free incase a few get loose while someone is dog training or??
