Thanks all! I read every ones comments twice (or more) and whilst mulling it over I cam across six boxes of Federal Powershok .243 for the gun which I already have a sexy Zeiss Conquest HD5 attached to. Its one of two loads that my gun tends to group sub moa (the other being Hornaday American Whitetail). If I can score a few more boxes I'll be able to get by this fall without the need for a new scope. if not, I'll have this thread.  Fortunately we have good lead time until fall.  8)

It is quite overpriced. A friend recommended a Celestron 65mm Ultima Zoom Spotting Scope for use in hunter class. You need a spotter to see the bullet holes even at 100 yds. The Celestron is $155 from Amazon & will resolve bullet holes at 300 yds, the farthest we shoot. There are 80 and 100 mm Celestrons also available.

One thing that’s just as important as the scope is a rigid stand. Tripods all seem to wobble in the wind. The best is to clamp an aluminum angle down to the bench & use a car window clamp on that. Nice & rigid - no wobbling.

Take a look at the ziess v4 if you havent. Can be had under your budget amount and i feel they are the best for that money right now.
id second this if you are wanting a twisty turret scope. 4-16x44 is a great value.
I also own  the 2nd gen. V4, but in the 6-24. Its probably the best scope I have ever owned, great scope for the money!
