Finally ordered a suppressor
« on: June 15, 2021, 07:35:43 PM »
I finally “pulled the trigger” on a suppressor today. Thunderbeast Ultra Gen 2 7”. I ordered it with the internal CB brake mount.

So this thing should ship to the FFL address that I put down on the website. And once it gets there they call me to come in and do the paperwork/fingerprint/tax stamp right? I ordered it from Mile High Shooting Accessories.

Worth it to have my gunsmith install the mount? It looks like it comes with the “peel” washers to get the brake in the right position. Doesn’t look too hard I guess.

Anything else a guy needs to know about these things? I’ll be running it on my Ridgeline 6.5 PRC for the most part. Eventually I’ll get a mount for my 300 wsm too.

Going to be a long wait, but I’m excited.  8)

You are right they should get ahold of you to do the form 4. You don't want to use a crush washer but anything else flat and solid would work. The concern is the break needs to be in line with the bore or you could get baffle strikes or worse shoot your can off.

Once you get it out of NFA jail you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

You need to contact your chosen dealer and find out what their policies are. They may or may not handle the Form 4 or the fingerprinting, or the tax stamp.

Thanks for the input guys.

My FFL does do the transfers. They have a silencer shop kiosk there.

I havent hunted with mine yet but so far at the range im not convinced they are the most awesome thing ever. Lol zero offsets from brake to can are dumb and they make everything get so hot so fast.

I have the exact same supressor in jail since February 25th. I am hoping that I have it by hunting season. I'll let you know how it shoots.

Best advice is to try and forget about it until you get the call. But since you won't, I'd wait until about 5 months after your check or debit transaction is taken by the atf. Then call maybe every two or three weeks until it's approved. I have 4 cans and my average wait is about 6 months. 2.5 being the shortest and 10 being the longest. As far as the muzzle Device, don't use a crush washer and have a smith install it if you're not comfortable doing it, make sure you use rockset or something on it as well. You can get a stick to make sure your can is in line with the bore so that you don't have a accident...... You will most likely have some poa/poi changes when running the suppressor vs not so be ready for that. If you haven't shot a suppressed rifle yet then just be aware it's hearing safe but still loud. Otherwise they are great for what they do but regular earplugs are a hell of a lot cheaper. Lol.
2nd piece of advice is to go ahead and get a .22 can as well because they are amazing, and shooting them is so much more enjoyable with the can on.

Anyone heard of silencer central? They claim suppressors in as little as 8 weeks, and shipped directly to your door :dunno:

No such thing.  Suppressors are heavily taxed by the feds and the approval wait is long and tedius. It's illegal for them to ship directly to you, much like it's illegal to direct ship a firearm now.

That’s how I understand it. Steve Rinella (meateater) recently posted about this shop, and that he was going to try it out. Haven’t heard of this until now...

Interesting,  I don't see how they circumvent the federal approval and delivery process. Even after being approved the silencer still has to be delivered via form 4473. I did watch the video but he didn't mention an 8 week turn around. I'd be interested to see how they actually deliver the suppressor.

I should say that my check was cashed 12/29/2020 so I'm anxiously waiting for my phone call from East County telling me it's time to get broken out of NFA jail.

Me too...since the fed requite the 4473 to be filled out in person at the premises or gun show.

You can e-sign a 4473 for but the dealer has to has a variance to do that and you still have to be present as they are required to verify your ID and that you are who you say you are.

It's not impossible to get a form 4 approval that quick just highly unlikely. Typically the fastest way would be to order a form 1 suppressor kit and go through the form 1 process. That can take as little as 5 weeks or the same length as a form 4, just depends. The kit can ship directly to you but you can't drill it out until you have your paperwork back.
Reading the website linked, it looks like they set up your trust, send in your packet, then send the can to their closest dealer to you and you would pick it up there once you get approved.
One of my local dealers is an indoor range so at least you can still play with your item before your stamp arrives.

I don't believe that is true. I ordered a suppressor from them about 2 months ago. They handled all of the paperwork except the fingerprints obviously. They have not asked for where I preferred them to ship it to. Also, I believe it would be illegal to use the suppressor without having it approved.

From stamp cash to today I'm at 191 days. The person I spoke with at the fed said they are averaging 210 days right now. I'm hoping to have mine in time to sight in and use it during our youth hunts. But I'm not to optimistic.

Some advice. If you are looking for solid accuracy. Run suppressors direct thread.

I have the exact same supressor in jail since February 25th. I am hoping that I have it by hunting season. I'll let you know how it shoots.

Well it did not make it here by hunting season but I got the call today that I can go pick my supressor up. It took exactly 1 year.

Good luck with that, when I bought mine they told me they thought I would have it before August. Here we are 6 months after that. If they have sped up, that is great.

Dang. I was being optimistic that it could be any day now. I’m at about 220 days since stamp cashed. Still says “in progress” online. Congrats to you tho!

The new eforms is supposed to be around 90 days. I am sure it will be longer on the front side but it will be shorter than paper submissions as all the documentation points can be verified automatically instead of manually. This eliminates the wait for review and puts it right into the stamp issue que assuming no errors or issues.

If you started the process in one state then moved to another you will need to notify atf and make an amendment i believe. verify with your dealer.

We're two months into Form 4 being live on eForms and we haven't seen a wave of approvals yet. So no one really knows what to expect. I thought it was interesting that many companies were advertising the possibility of approvals in 90 days.

Did mine through Silencer Central.  Can't wait!  Hope to have mine by my Birthday in March, sooner would be awesome!  :)
Considering what you've had to go through with the saga of your new home I feel bad for saying this but FWIW I'm nearly a full year in waiting on three new cans from Silencer Central and still haven't heard a word from them.  Others I've talked to were around a year on their approvals from SC also.  Hopefully yours will come much sooner but be prepared for it to take at least a year.

I did mine while I was in Tennessee.  Silencer Center.  Wonder if the state it wad dine in will matter?

You will probably want to check with them asap. I believe your ID has to match the address you put down and your current address. Otherwise you will have to redo everything and start the wait again. I also believe the only way around that is if you are active military and were given new orders so you had to move. I'm pretty sure you can then notify the atf and give them a copy of the orders for the move and then they will proceed as normal.
A member on here was the first one at their shop to submit a e-file form 4 the day it opened up and he hasn't got it back yet. The next month will be interesting to see if they start coming back in the estimated time frame or not. That reminds me, I need to get to work on a couple form 1 sbr's as well.

Everthing matches.  I am not from Tennessee was just there for the NWTF convention.  I live here in WA.  They were there and I talked with them and they had a smoking deal on one that would fit multiple calipers so I decided it was time.  I am not worry about time frame they jsut told mw with new e forms 4-6 months.

I called ATF today. They said my application is “pending” and the current average wait is at 8 months. I’m at 7.5 months now. Hopefully any day…

Well I hope they are coming back approved sooner than later, however, I've been getting approvals in the past two months for customers who's stamps cashed between February and March 2021.  One guy somehow seemingly skipped the first batch of 2021 purchases and got his approval in November 2021 after having his stamped cashed in February 2021.

Interesting. Let’s hope sooner than later. As long as mine comes by the time I have my new rifle in my hands, which likely isn’t until June anyway, I’ll be happy.

Dang that’s awesome!

I don’t think I ever updated this thread, but I ended up with mine after about 13 months! While it was worth the wait, it would be great if only a couple months could become the new trend.

I noticed they charged my $200 really early on, maybe a week or so after applying. Hopefully the process is getting quicker.  I did once have a security clearance to work on the B-2 bomber in the early 90’s, maybe that helped?? I’ll never know.

These days it's paid at the time of submission with eforms.
