Experienced slug gunners, looking for some input.
« on: June 20, 2021, 10:54:24 AM »
Hello Folks,

I've managed to find a Carlson's riffled slug barrel with a cantilever mount rail to pair with my 12 gauge Remington 870 Express Magnum. I could not for the life of me find a barrel actually made by Remington.

I bought a lower end scope optimized for shotguns shooting slugs - KonusPro 1.5x-5x32 zoom.

I could not find an available gunsmith at the time so I mounted the scope as best I could.

I'm shooting Hornady SST 2/34" 300 grain slugs with it.

At 25 yards I can shoot very tight groups, around 1 inch, sometimes all in one big hole. The problem with my gun club is we only have 25 yard, 100 yard, and a 200 yard rifle range.

After getting consistent point of aim/point of impact at 25 yards I took it out to 100 yards, twice now. At 100 yards, with a solid muzzle and stock rest, a slow and steady trigger press my shots land anywhere from 3 to 7 inches off point of aim, in ANY RANDOM GIVEN DIRECTION.

I do intend on taking it out to a national forest somewhere and seeing how it performs at 50-60 yards, which I'm hoping will be much more consistent and accurate.

The areas I plan to hunt will not offer shots beyond 70 yards at the most anyways, but I'm very curious to hear from anyone else with a similar slug gun set up. What is your accuracy like with your slug barrel and sabot slugs around 100 yards? What slugs are you shooting? Any input is appreciated.

Tried 3 different slugs til I found ones that shot.  All saboted.  I think it was remington sabots I ended up with.  I would at least 3 dif saboted rounds.

I bought about 10 brands of slugs to find the right one. Sometimes they will group well at close range and really start to walk around at the extended distances. If its consistent at 25 its probably not the scope and I would bet its just the bullets not stabilizing correctly. I would shoot a few brands at 50 and 100 and see what the gun does with each ammo. Might find one that groups 2" at 50 and 100 which is better then same hole at 50 and 5" at 100.

I am running the same slugs in mine and that is what my gun does. It shoots about 2" groups at 50 and 100 and about 3" at 150. So while it does not put them in the same hole it is keeps a very uninform group at all ranges. I shoot it to 200 regularly and it runs about 5-6" groups.

The Hornandy SST that you are currently shooting is what works the best in my Mossberg rifled barrel, consistent accuracy to 100 yards.

I have a 870 with Cantilever slug barrel and if I rest the foregrip on sand bags and shoot as if it were a rifle it will group fine at 25 and all over at 100. I have found that I need to shoot holding the foregrip with my left hand and that elbow planted firmly on the bench and gun pulled tight into my shoulder and I will get good groups. I shoot the Hornady SST bullets in my 12ga 870 as well and they are deadly when I have the proper form when shooting that gun. I also found that scrubbing the barrel with a
WD-40 soaked brush gets the melted Sabot crud out of the barrel nicely and improves groups. I will suggest adding at Limbsaver butt pad to the 870 as it will tame the recoil a bunch.

Did you level the scope with the barrel?

Ok awesome. I've definitely been shooting it like a rifle, using a bag on the foregrip. I'll give your suggestions a try, thank you.

To the best of my ability yes. I need to get a level more geared for the job.
