Apology to Cohoho
« on: April 27, 2009, 07:52:31 AM »
For messing up his chance at a state record gobbler  :bash:  I called one into him that seemed to want to committ suicide. I thought the bird was hung up out of range so I tried to slip back a little and try to pull him in and it caught my movement.(works for elk) Little did I know he was in full strut 25 yards below ready to die. I couldn't see over the edge but Mike says it was a 180 class B&C gobbler tripping over it's 14 inch beard  :dunno: Live and Learn. I hope he talks to me again  :'(  :chuckle:

dang that sucks. We had a state record elude us as well. I know the feeling. There is always next next time!!

I hate it when they are firing back and then all the sudden they stop. I have learned to sit tight. It is hard but it paid off this year on my first bird. He was lit up off the roost and was lit all the way to about 80 yards. Luckily I spotted him in the timber just before he quit gobbling. I sat tight at the decoys and kept calling and I watched him slink into range. He came the last 50 yards in about 20 minutes and never made a peep.

I think he might be kidding about the 14 inch beard  ;) It was probably a Jake and he is trying to make me feel bad. We did figure out that we needed to be more patient unless they had hens, then they weren't budging or they would move off.

Man that sucks... Stickslinger doesn't actually use decoys, he pretends he is a Jake and holds real still in this postition while calling. :chuckle:

I didn't want that other one any how, a 180" beard is just too dang small for me, besides not sure if Tom moving or the bird tripping over his seven beards was the reason he left...  It was heck trying to line up a shoot on a bird like that when he kept tripping over his beards...    :chuckle:  Rule number #1 - Never, ever shoot a Turkey less than 181" ever....   :chuckle:  We hiked and hiked (12 miles) the 2nd day and only had a couple respond back, saw several Moose, one guy need us to give him permission slip to get off the road for us to pass...  Great time, explored new areas, saw a bunch of turkeys, bunch of elks, crap load of deer and several moose, I think very successful in my eyes, besides, BUTTERBALL taste better... and my caller (T-Mike), man he is the best in the business...  Too many chicks for the "Toms" to come to us :dunno:.
