Rookie mistakes...
« on: April 29, 2009, 09:51:09 AM »
I managed to escape over to my property for six days using the excuse that I was going to work on the cabin  ;)  the wife bought it and let me go...  :IBCOOL:

I did managed to get a little bit done  including getting my framing inspection but my real goal was to bag a Turkey.  The rest of the work will have to wait until next trip...  :P

I had one group of Turkeys roosting about a 1/4 mile from my property.  Nearly every morning they'd march over to a neighbors property and gobble away.. and fight.  The first morning I sat across the field from them and called.  I got the hens attention but they wouldn't cross.   They just stared me down.  Hoping that my camo would conceal me I decided to try to back out of there and hopefully convince them to come look for me.  I got busted right away and they took off down toward the back edge of my property.

I knew about where they would go so I tried to cut them off at the pass.  I set up and started calling.  No answers.  I figured they were too spooked so I gave up.  About 10 minutes after I leave I hear a gobbler right about where I was  :bash:  I jet back towards him and set up with a patch of trees between us.  I call, he answers but he ain't coming.  I decide to try to go get him and I get busted again...  :(

The next day I try it again but other than a few answers they just won't come across the field to my property.  One the third day another group shows up and I can hear them bantering back and forth.  I try to lure the new group but the same group that has foiled me starts moving in.  I'm in a pretty good spot on the edge of an opening.  I wait and they get were I can see them through the trees about 100 yards away but stop and just look in my direction.  I guess when they didn't see any turkeys making the racket they figured it out.  :dunno:

The next morning I'm heading out a little bit later and the Turkeys are making all kinds of racket and on the move.  I think the two groups may have merged.  I hustle down to the back corner of my property and sure enough they are on the way there.  I look for an ambush site and find a perfect spot just ahead of me.  As I cross the opening I come face to face with the turkeys leading the bunch...  Busted  :'(  I should have just plopped down right where I was and waited instead of trying for the perfect set up.

I was pleased at how they responded to my calls and frustrated by my lack of patience.  I did find that if I called in an area, including at my cabin a Turkey would eventually come check it out.  One afternoon while returning with some building materials I had a small group right at the cabin as I drove up.  They fled when they saw I was headed in and I never heard or saw them again.

Good fun but man do I have a lot to learn about Turkey hunting.

Oh, did see a nice Moose pass through early in the week.  Took a picture of his tracks a few days later.

Thanks guys.  It's coming together.  Plenty of work left to do.  I'm hoping to get the outside done by this summer.

If it had Elk using nearby in the fall, it would be perfect.  All and all we feel very blessed to have found it.  It is a great escape back to reality for us.
