I am thinking about buying a spotting scope but not for this season but by next year's season and was looking at a Vortex Razor HD 27-60x85 Spotting Scope for 1600.00 at sportsman warehouse. Mentioned this to my grandson and he said he has been looking at scopes too and was thinking of the Leupold GR 15-30x50mm Gold Ring Compact Spotting Scope for around 600.00.

He said he has heard good things about it and because we carry a fair amount of stuff with us he thought it would be a better fit with are style of hunting as it is lighter than the ones I have looked at so far.

One of my criteria's for a scope is I plan on using it year round for various things, at least whenever I can steal it back from kids and grand-kids and I'll be hiking with it so weight is a factor to consider for me.

So any comments on the  Leupold GR 15-30x50mm Gold Ring Compact Spotting Scope would be appreciated. I am familiar with various Vortex Binocs and their warranty, which I have used once.

I have one, it’s been great.  The only problem is in warmer weather you’re good to only about 12-1400 yards trying to look at points on a deer.  But the big bonus is cutting weight.  Great glass for the price point.

This was taken at about 900-1000 yards

I have one as well. When I was shopping spotters, the advice I was given was to get the spotter that you will take with you every time. If it's too big/bulky/heavy, you just won't take it with you everywhere. It doesn't do you any good at home in the closet. So I decided to go for the compact Leupold and never looked back. I take it with me on virtually every hunting trip and it has made a difference for me. Here is a video I took through it with my I-Phone a couple weekends ago. We were roughly 1200 yards out and it was well over 80 degrees at that point. The heat mirage is obvious, but the clarity was still reasonable. I've used it a lot on fall hunts and am happy with it.

I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.
