Estimate bear weight
« on: July 14, 2021, 04:38:19 PM »
I already have been told it is hard to estimate a bears weight by a picture. But with you experienced bear hunters out there. I figure you might be able to get close. This big guy has been a frequent model on my game camera.
I post the camera 36" off the ground. I measured after I saw the side profile picture.

What are we looking at??  If your saying that cam is 39" and the bear is on all four pads, you could assume that bear is 39" plus half the height of the body again???  That would make this bear 50+" tall which is very unlikely.  Not enough information to give a guess in my humble opinion.

Do you have any other pictures??  Maybe one with the head or ears??

Doesn't matter how high off the ground you put the cam, it's about how level it is to even be able to start to judge. Most guys who are trying to size up animals will have a tree or some other object well in front of the cam that they can judge off of. I have some cams a foot off the ground and others 15'. No way to size up off that alone in my opinion. Looks like a good bear though. Good luck.

Little newer picture

Is that a 50lb salt block in the second picture?  If so I would say that is an above average bear.  I would put him at 300+ lbs in the fall after gorging on berries.

Tiny ears big bear!
LOL

Seriously, if the ears look proportionally tiny, it is a good sized bear!

The. Again, if it’s belly is dragging, it is a good bet it is a good size bear,

:yeah: Best way to determine a bears weight and sex is shoot it😂 based on the last picture that bear should be 300 or a little better. Please shoot and weight 👍 I don’t think a lot of people realize how above average a 300 pounder is at least in Idaho. I have seen hundreds of dead bears and I think average that’s killed is around 150 but that’s for Idaho and our bears get hammered with liberal seasons

That bear is 287.75 pounds, give or take a half a pound.

I ended putting a mineral block out there, just he would stop eating my deer blocks in one sitting. He is definitely a brute of a hog. I'll let you know in August hopefully.
