New Bear Rug!
« on: July 20, 2021, 12:27:49 PM »
Just got the call from my taxidermist that my bear rug is ready! This is my first rug, and I want to hang it on my wall. I've had a space cleared out for it for several months now and stoked to go pick it up.

How do you guys hang your bear rugs?

I don't have a pic of the finished rug, but here is a picture of the bear when Tubbs got it back from getting tanned, so it's not on the rug or stretched yet.

That looks like a great color and coat, can't wait to see the rug! To answer your question, wherever they fit, floor, wall, couch, haven't tried ceiling yet...

Can’t wait to see the finished product.

To your question…..   The finished rug should come with some hardware secured to it that allows you to hang it.  Dry wall anchors and a few screws and you are good to go.  I make sure to stretch them on the wall before anchoring to make sure they look good and don’t sag.  It’s a two person job for sure.

Ah, okay, I wasn't sure if there was going to be hardware on it or not. That will make me feel a lot better. I wasn't sure if I was going to need to nail through it or something  :yike:

Thanks guys, I may pick it up tomorrow or Thursday. I'll post pics when I get it hung up!

Did you do open or closed mouth?   I have both and like both…..but apparently most people do open, curious what you went with.

I hung my most recent rug using the little picture hangers with the single angled pin. I asked for loops to be sewn into the matting and it came with nice little metal D-rings about every 8" around the perimeter. It was easy to hang and it hasn't fallen down yet.

Oh I think I misunderstood your question. I agree, its a two-person job. Mine haven't come with hangers, so I've been using small nails through both felt layers next to the hide, so the fur covers them. Around the head, I touched them with a black marker or paint and you can't see them unless you are looking. It will most likely be there a while so take your time until you're happy with it!

I'll definitely post back when I pick it up! I was just thinking, I've been doing a lot of work on my house and have been finishing some drywall so my place is despicably dirty. I may wait a week or two to pick it up just so I don't need to hide it to keep it clean while I wrap up some remodeling. I shot this bear in 2018, so I'm itching to finally have it in my hands.

jrebel, I dropped it off with Tubbs in April of 2020 I believe, soooo I don't really remember if I said mouth open or closed. I don't even remember if I said brown or black for the rug color. But it was one of those ;) I think I went with mouth open!

Okay, I'll be sure to have some assistance with it. I hope there are hangers or something in it, but if not I'll do the small nails through the felt like you did.

This is one of my bear mounts.  Shot him in 1992 in Colville.  He has held up really good for 4 moves...thinking this will be the last time.  Yes it's a 2 person job.  I was able to separate the 2 felt layers and with drywall anchors put a large screw with a washer between the felt layers.  Thing I screwed up was hanging the rear end first not remembering the front legs were longer than the rear but it almost worked on my vaulted ceiling.  Pics never post correctly...always rotated

I didn’t have hooks sewed into mine, so I separated the felt layers and used a staple gun. Smaller holes in wall, and I wasn’t looking to move it anytime soon.

This is one of my Bears with brass D loops on the back. Its a little heavier so it was nice to anchor it to that barn wood wall with 3/4" plywood behind it.

My dad went in to pay a deposit on a deer mount and checked on my bear. I'm picking it up tomorrow, but here is a pic of it all done. I'm not sure it's going to fit on the wall I was planning on putting it on.  :yike:

Tubbs said this bear was an absolute linebacker and was super wide -- between 250-300lb sow. I feel like it weighed more than that, but I have no real way of knowing. It took me 3.5 full freighter pack loads to get it out by myself and each pack was heavy enough to tip me over if I stumbled or tried to sit down to rest.

That's not something I noticed while watching her wander through the brush before I pinched the trigger...

But I do remember how dense the fat was on her.. talk about getting greasy cleaning an animal..

Got the bear home from Tubbs on Friday. Tried to mock it up (alone..) on the pine wall and I don't think it's going to fit well enough with my two year old lab wandering around... I think I've got a good spot for it, but that spot had been reserved for my dad's alaskan moose.

Tubbs put a nice sturdy ring on the underside of the head and advised me to put that on a stud and then swing the bear in whatever direction I wanted and just put finishing nail or something behind the paws to hold the arms/legs out how I want them.

Will post back again when it's on the wall, because I like sharing my bear with you all

I'm going to replace the carpet in the next year or so. But it's thick and cushy and I love laying on it while I've got it  :chuckle: I for some reason enjoy the color against all of the brown and grey in my house!
