I would start with your airline, most have the info on their website and then others can help with experience if you post what airline you are flying.  Airlines are different with baggage rules, how much it costs, etc.

Archery gear is treated the same as any sports equipment like golf clubs for the most part.

Hard case and a lock, check it in just like a gun.  Have to present ID at your destination to pick it up.   Pretty simple process.
I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

It doesn't matter what you think...

You had to take yours to TSA like a firearm?  I just checked mine like a set of golf clubs, locked for my security but it wasn't required.

I'd definitely have a hard case and throw some of your clothes in with the bow...  You will need TSA approved locks...  That's it.

It should be like any other checked baggage. It should not require TSA inspection. However, different airlines and some agents may have a different perspective. They probably don't see archery gear very often and may make incorrect assumptions.

I flew Alaska airlines out of SeaTac and they just considered my case an oversized item, not a weapon or anything like that.  You drop it off at the same place as guns but it doesn't have to be inspected.
