Mudflow Archery Cow Tag 2021
« on: June 13, 2021, 04:03:31 PM »
Hey all,

Got lucky after twelve years and drew the mudflow 2021 archery cow tag. Going to try and get it done with my recurve for my first elk (after loads of archery deer, a moose, and a caribou). I'd be grateful for any insights from people who've hunted the unit before. Particularly:

-access points
-potential for camping
-thoughts about which of the dates in the split season (early Sept 4-10 or late Nov 18-22) would be a better opportunity to get a cow.

I'm excited to start scouting. Thanks!

Fun tag to have. Lots of elk and you should be chasing them every day early or late. If it were me I'd access from forest service road coming out of Toutle and you can camp on the roads bordering the unit. You should have a lot of fun. Not a slam dunk because it's hunting but you should enjoy it.

That should be a great opportunity for your recurve.
I go up there 5 or 6 times a year.
Send me a pm of questions and I will do my best.

Made it up there this last weekend and found some good access points. Does anyone know if Weyerhauser generally closes gates on the 3000 and 4250 line, or leaves them open during hunting season (fire risk notwithstanding)? I hope open...

If any other tag holders for the unit want intel on access I'm happy to share and swap what I know via PM. Would welcome any further advice from people with experience in the unit about places to explore to look for cows. Thanks!

Those roads are for public access to the state land. Weyerhaeuser doesn't ever close those roads, except the one year I drew an archery Toutle permit, which if I remember correctly was 2001.  :bash:

I'm pretty sure they've never done it since then. I had a modern firearm bull permit for Mudflow last year, and this year I drew the Mudflow muzzleloader cow permit. Looking forward to it. If I were you I'd definitely plan on getting it done in the early season.
