Westside berries 2021
« on: July 31, 2021, 04:22:49 PM »
Saw the Eastside thread and figured we'd start a Westside thread. How are the berries looking right now? Elevation? Did the heat wave destroy them all?

Olympia side of Capitol forest found red huckleberries trailing blackberry, thimble berries and a few regular blackberries. Lowlands. Only one bush of the reds. Thimbles we’re on the way out and the blackberries were just starting.

I was at about 5500feet today off of Hwy410 and saw one huckleberry bush with red berries, the rest had loads of green just starting berries on them. Also saw a lot of wild strawberries between 3000-4200feet.

Hiked in up to 6000’ North of Mt Baker. Berries in open south or west facing meadows looked like the flowers were gone with no fruit. Berries near hemlock and fur looked way better. At 4500’ or where the timber meets the open looks really green, but big berries.
I also drove some logging roads. 2500’ All the berries with cover look good. Any berry you can think of is going good. I have no idea where my calls are. Bummed. I was gonna sit over a nice clear cut and call this morning.

Is there a thread that shows what all the various berries are in western washington?  I saw a bunch of types of berries in various stages when I was out yesterday, but I'm kinda dumb on berry identification.  Besides blackberries, huckleberries, salmon berries, and blueberries, what else might I expect to find in the I90 corridor so that I can look them up on the interwebs and learn what they are in advance?

The app I showed you is cool. You can take a pic of things while you are out there and it tells you all about it. Also tells you generally info on what plants are in your region.

Must be hit and miss.  I was north of Baker yesterday as well.  At 5-5500' about a quarter of the huckleberry fields contain berries, and those berries were pretty darn small.

All plants, flowers, vegetation is still really green though.  I expect it to turn yellow over the next few weeks.
