How big is he??? (Updated 9-27-21)
« on: July 31, 2021, 05:29:28 PM »
Was out scouting a couple of weeks ago here in Eastern Washington and came across a nice bachelor herd of 4 bucks.  One is quite large.  Me and my hunting partners are arguing over how big we think he is.  Thought it would be fun during these doldrum hot days of summer to get some of your guesses.  He is in velvet so it can make them sometimes look bigger.  He has great mass and being that he was filmed July 22nd, he might continue to still grow some tine length (anyone have a good idea of when growth seems to stop in the summer?)  Ill see if I can add some pictures.  Sorry, I was on my ATV and only have cell phone pictures and they aren't that great.  160's?, 170's?, 180's????

Pretty nice buck. Hard to tell. Atypical?

He is a clean cut 4x4 typical with eye guards.  I was able to see him much better than the pictures with my I-Phone because I was able to see him with bino's at 125 yards.  I think he might hit the 180 mark but the velvet can screw me up.  His mass is impressive and I think his forks will continue to deepen with growth but I could be wrong.  I will go back up and re-locate him and get some spotting scope pictures in a week or so.  three of the four bucks were probably shooters with two of them being in the 150's to low 160's if I was to guess.

I think he’s probably about done growing. Looks like he’s got a good frame and good front forks but his back forks are not very deep. I don’t think he’d be 180” but I’m not really good enough at estimating scores. I think he’s a 160 type buck.

Hard to tell. His forks look pretty shallow. I think Jack’s guesstimate is where he’ll end up.

It is super hard to say....but that thing looks significantly larger than my 28" wide 4x4 that scored 156 and change.

Based on my limited experience with scored antlers I think 165”. I think it’s enormous. Great animal

From what I can tell, his frame, his mass say better than 160. But, his back forks don’t appear to be all that great, the fronts look good. I think 175 or better. Better pics coming?

Hard to tell symmetry in those pics but with the overall height and mass and the look of his forks he may gross 180 but not net. Doesn't look symmetrical enough. Still a shooter in my book. No hesitation.

First pictures in the beginning of this post are back in July.  Took more pictures August 21st.  Bucks still in velvet but the bachelor heard was down to the three smaller bucks and the big boy was on his own away from the rest.  the picture I took of him was not to good due to it being at dusk as the picture of the 3 others was in better light.  All four bucks are shooters.  I can tell you this, the smallest buck (far buck on the right) is a 3X4 and has bases bigger than you can get your fingers around (5.25 inches and 5.5 inches) and is 23 inches wide.  He gross scored 148.5 inches and is missing a G-3 on one side.  They are also now hard horned with velvet all stripped off.  That I know for sure.  ;)

I am going to take a shot in the dark and say he is 148.5,  but that is just a random guess....
