Luxury tent mattress?
« on: August 03, 2021, 02:52:03 PM »
I just ordered a Kodiak Canvas tent, as the wife and I want to start doing some car camping after a long hiatus. What's the latest and greatest in comfortable beds? Is there anything better than the old aero-beds? Weight and size are not a concern, although I don't want to be strapping a Posturepedic mattress to the roof!  :chuckle:

I personally like cots unless you and the old lady have to be on the same bed. The space saved by being able to put things under a cot is super nice. A good cot pad is all you need for a quality night's rest

Individual cots are the way to go IMO, definitely more versatile for space saving and maneuverability  can also arrange open space inside the tent as needed or dictated by weather plus provides plenty of storage space underneath. The wife and I use the plastic totes as nightstands for glasses, flashlights, etc. Enjoy the Flexbow tent

That is what we do. A tote brings gear in and next to head of cot for night stand. Boots, duffle bag of clothes etc goes under the cot.

What I found is all of the blow up mattresses will leak eventually.
I have had six different queen sized mattresses, some with frames most without. My advice is if your wife wants to come with you, and you still have “that spark” get two Big Agnes Extra wide sleeping bags, and zip them together. Or a good comforter. And by a decent queen size blow up mattress, understanding you will need to replace it after a couple trips. And bring another comforter or blanket to lay between you and the mattress. The air in the mattress can conduct cold air. Get a battery powered air pump, they work well at inflating air mattresses.
If that spark is not a high priority, or going with Friends, us a good cot with decent pad. This is what I do when hunting solo or with a hunting buddy.

In the wall tent I use the cot with an Exped Megamat 10.... air mattress and a cot, I sleep nearly as good as home :)

I use a cot with an old school 3 or 4" open cell foam pad with a memory foam 4" pad on top.  The coupe de grace is the biggest, thickest flannel sleeping bag you can find.  I have yet to find someone that isn't impressed with the setup or thinks there is a better camping bed possible.

Fred Meyer used to sell the open cell pads and I had a memory foam topper I cut to the same size and roll them up together for storage.

This. This is exactly what I do for myself. I got a double size version for my wife and I for sleeping on the ground.

Lots of great info guys. Looks like a couple cots is the way to go. Can double as a setup when taking a buddy.
