« on: August 07, 2021, 08:15:43 AM »
My dad drew white river tag for modern he isn’t planning on buying Hancock pass for this one since we already sunk 300$ into regular Hancock pass. Does anyone have any tips or advice for him? This will be his first elk if he is able connect on one. Thank you all in advance appreciate any tips

What kind of hunting can your dad do, road, hiking? Can he get around?  The white river hancock pass is cheaper and can get you into more area, especially if road hunting is in your plans.  It’s a long season so don’t give up!  You may see the very end of the rut if you hunt the starting dates, don’t be shy to call a bit. Get to know the forest service roads, lots to cover.  Plenty of places to dry camp, do the speed limit when you drive through green water, they radar there a lot.

Thank you and he can walk some but not super far like he used to we are still debating the hancock pass but not sure yet and thanks for the heads up on the speed limit as well definitely will follow that.

I would highly recommend the Hancock pass...highly!!! I shot my bull right off of a road in there after spending all day hiking into the Norse Peak area and not seeing a single elk (the week prior I had scouted several bulls in there)...but there are a few places to look for elk that he can drive up to and hike but it is thick and steep.

Corral Pass: the road is finally open to the top again, though it is very rough. Once at the top, take the trail right or left, both go along the ridgeline and you can spot/find bulls in the burn.

Dalles Ridge: head to the trailhead (look for elk along the way) and hike up the trail a ways...it is a little steep in places but not too bad, especially as you get near the junction.

George Lake: Look for the directions (WTA website) that takes you to a hidden trailhead along the road (almost at the end) and then walk up...the first mile is steep but once you get over the small peak it flattens out and there is a few elk...eventually this trail meets up with the Dalles Ridge trail which if you keep gong several miles it comes to Corral Pass.

Look at some of the other roads (FS74 and it's spurs)...but you might end up spending more in gas $$$ than if you would just buy the hancock pass, which can be a one day and done hunt depending on weather, moon, etc.

Solid advice right there! Glad to hear Corral is open again been years since I was up there my brother shot his first Blacktail up there in the late 70's and that is the first big Deer hunt I went on when I was a kid.

Grade nailed it in his first paragraph. Almost the same thing happened to us in 2019. Except it was heavy snow keeping us out of the high country. We bought the Hancock walk in pass and it saved the hunt I waited 18 years to draw a tag for. And we saw lot's of elk in the Hancock country. If I had that tag again I'd do the exact same thing....no question.

Can't we all just get along?
