Muzzleloader and fires.

I'm not trying to be that guy, but it's so dam dry out I've been waiting for rain to shoot my muzzleloader. It's had a load in it for 3 years. I'm west side elk hunting this year with son in law. We got a ton of rain last night so I shot it to see if it was still on. Yes, it's still on. I saw where the bullet cut into the ground and to my surprise it was dry as a bone just under the pine needles. This is just a FYI. Not trying stir the pot. I evacuated a friend last Sunday when the Ford,  Corkscrew canyon fire broke out. It was coming fast, we loaded what we could and got out of there. Thanks to the DNR his home was saved.

Just curious though, how would you feel about someone bear hunting after recent rains.

I think I'm going with.
What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
Not sure that a muzzle loader is the best way to test fire danger.

I dont see any more danger shooting a modern muzzleloader than a rifle.

I always thought it was about muzzle flash.
Shooting through dry grass or brush.
More than the bullet hitting dirt.
I don't know ,I might be wrong.

Don't get me wrong guys, If there was a day to target shoot today is better than any other day we have had.
Trust me I thought about it that's for sure. I got a rifle I need to sight in. And just for the fun of target shooting.
And I don't blame PA BEN for firing that muzzleloader when it's been loaded so long.
Better today than tomorrow.
That might be a better message.
Few hours of sun and will be back in the dry zone.
We have so much dry fuel that it won't take long to dry back out.

Only a rifle doesn't have the muzzle flash like a muzzleloader. I've never been shy about shooting my rifle until this year, it's not the muzzle flash I worry about. 1 spark off a rock could start a fire. Most likely not, but I definitely don't want to be that guy.

You might be surprised... shoot it at night and the light might come on!  We have held night shoots and it like fireworks from the muzzle.

I have used a muzzle loader shotgun for hunting doves in California when I lived down there.  And yes I have started a couple of small fires in the dried grass area next to the planted row crops.  Burning embers/powder and burning wads will start a fire in dry grass and weeds.  It got to where I always had at least a 5 gallon jug of water with me when I went hunting with the muzzle loader.
It can happen!

 Just a pet peeve, but FYI most muzzleloaders are rifles.

 It is the rifled bore that makes a rifle, not a metallic cartridge.
