Waterfowl Ammo
« on: August 22, 2021, 08:45:07 PM »
If your an avid waterfowl hunter, you may want to grab what you anticipate shooting this season, prior to the season.  It sounds like it will be hard to find come November.  Hopefully the predictions are incorrect, but it was pretty sparse after mid December last year.  I purchased my seasons needs this past week.

I began stocking up 6 months ago. It's hard to find in stores or online now.

Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate. - Psalm 127:3-5

Rogers is usually pretty good about keeping waterfowl ammo in stock.  Plenty of Federal and other brands in stock in a variety of shot sizes in 12 ga and 10ga.  Not much for 20ga.

I am stocked up well through next season. What is this prediction you mention? I must be out of the loop. I am having zero luck finding my steel quail loads.

I’ve been looking there a bunch. Not any of the brands I use unfortunately. I’m trying to avoid Federal ammo after a couple people I know lost their shotgun barrels to them.  I’ve got enough for a couple weeks at least

:yeah:  I've shot over 5k rounds of their black cloud without a hiccup.

To help with the question to Bear, I don't know what he's experienced. I've had three wads stuck in the barrel. One round without powder and one round no shot, all Black Cloud. I will shoot Federal but only the blue box stuff. :twocents:

I wouldn't be worried about using Federal.  Keep it dry and it won't fail you.  May run into load where the primer is bad or set in a bit far and may or maynot go off depending on shotgun.  Between my boys and myself we have shot cases of it without issue.  If they are blowing barrels, that is not the ammo's fault.  The powder is getting moisture and they are not catching a squib load and sending a following shot to quick and blowing the barrel.  They maybe keeping ammo in their boat, rig or pack that is getting moisture.  Dry rounds typically don't lead to this unless your hand loading and not paying attention.

I bought a case towards the end of last year and luckily, shot pretty well so still have a bunch of boxes left. Still not a bad to grab any you can find just to be safe.

Maybe it was a fluke. Just happened to my son and a friend. Both were Benelli Novas with Federal ammo.  Just was enough for me to avoid them. I’m sure they’re not the only ammo that someone has had an issue with. I can’t speak for the other guy but my son(almost 30) is extremely fussy with his hunting equipment so I’d be surprised if the ammo or shotgun wasn’t taken care of properly

I have a few cases set off for just this reason. If last year was a prelude to this year I'll shoot about 3.5 boxes and have plenty leftover for 2022.

Having to buy a few boxes at a time is getting old. Where are you guys seeing full cases for sale? I checked Rogers and didn’t see much. I’ve been trying to buy whatever the local store limit is, but have dove/trap rounds to buy too.

Rogers Webb’s and Mack’s pw

I have a few cases and hope to get a few more of the golden goose if I can find some.

Sportsman’s has had them in stock the last few times I went in. Not seeing any lead shot though in game loads.

Sportsmen’s has a 5 box limit at the moment. My last two trips have been for the Dove opener in a little over a week.

Looking for a case or two of 3" steel, preferably #2 or #3.  Checked Rogers, Mack'sPW etc. and it looks as if they are out of stock. Going to start looking locally (Tacoma and surrounding area). If anybody can help out, any intel would be appreciated!

If you're willing to drive up to Seattle, Outdoor Emporium had some #2 today. I've also had luck buying ammo in places where people wouldn't typically go as a first resort, like Ace Hardware stores.

If you’re satisfied with super x or drylock, there were a few at the Yakima Walmarts.

I got in on a stupid deal.... bought 15 cases for myself and 3 close friends in an order with another friend and all his friends straight from the manufacturer.... order was big enough shipping was free.... worked out to right about $10.50/box. I estimate the total order was around 150 cases between all of us.
So glad I did. Had to convince the wife it was a necessary purchase to get 5.5 cases in one shot. If only we got to convert the money we saved into being able to spend towards other hunting related purchases.
Hoping my supply gets me back to stable times

Picked up 5 boxes of "Migra" 3" 12ga. at Sportsmans in Silverdale.  Never heard of the stuff.  They stack 2 different shot sizes in the shell.  Worth a try, but the cost was about double of what I'm used to paying through Rogers.  They had quite a bit of it in stock.  Cheapest they had.
