Dogs running deer on cam?
« on: August 26, 2021, 11:28:56 AM »
I have camera pics of 2 dogs in the exact same spot, year after year. They run around in the middle of the night or daylight and typically they are about 2 or 3 minutes behind a deer that just passed by trotting. Someone cares about these dogs because they have collars on, they're well fed, and one even had an Elizabethan (recovery) collar on at one point. The spot is 3 miles from any house (not far for a dog I know), but I asked neighbors and they didn't recognize them. I know people shoot dogs for running deer but I don't have any interest in that. Just wish they would knock it off. They run together and are usually panting hard.

Anyone have any experience or stories pertaining to this?

I think you can only shoot them if they are threating you or your livestock.  Only the WDFW can shoot them for harassing wildlife.

I have had the same issue but was able to contact the owner and get the animals controlled.  The owner didn't realize how far they were traveling or what they were doing.

Way easier conversation to have than "yes, I shot your dog".

Its best to let the wardens handle that one, but Id recommend calling them every time you see them on your property and regardless, you saw them chasing deer.

I have a neighbor with offending dogs and they run because he doesnt feed them, but still not allowed to hunt and kill deer as they do when they can catch them.  I see them come through the fence, I shoot close to them, they run back where they belong, but that doesnt prevent them from coming over at night and tipping cans and eating cats food and crapping everywhere.

May have a house closer than you realize to where you trail cameras are setup.  3 miles seems bit for for these dogs to continuously show up.  They may like the bait you put out and keep coming back for more.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

I didn't tell you this........
But heard it from a friend once ,I swear and pinky promise.
Take a rat trap for like two bucks ,nail it to a fence post or something that's about canine nose height.
Put yourself a little treat on there.
When they get that SLAP in the face or nose ,it wont hurt them to bad and they won't come back for awhile.
Never mind forget I told you that.

3 miles is nothing for a couple dogs out at night, and a couple deer running by a few minutes before dogs run through a camera hardly seems like “running deer” to me.  Those deer are hopping out of the way of all manner of creatures all day and all night long.  Damn near 24/7 they are eating, sleeping, or 2-3 minutes ahead trotting away from something.  Dogs flush deer constantly while dinking around the woods.  Deer constantly move away from loud running things at night.  No big deal.  Hell i walked to my truck last night and flushed deer out of the bushes.  Somebody shoot me.

OP hasn't quite clarified whether he'll be shooting the dogs or not, but shooting humans is also a felony FYI...    :o :bash:
