High Hunt + Trail for my dad (less animals is OK)
« on: August 29, 2021, 10:14:44 AM »
Hi all, I appreciate all of the information on this forum--especially for someone who has gotten more into hunting in their 30's. Due to a change in plans, I'm looking for a nice trail that my father can accompany my brother and I on in a high buck area; we are now more interested in getting him out into backpacking again than finding a deer.

More information: I was planning on doing the high buck hunt with my brother this year; to be clear we plan for success but do not expect it (he is deerless and I have one from a couple years ago during general modern). I understand this can be a grueling hunt, few animals, etc. I'm OK with that because I like the adventure. Recently, my dad who used to backpack in the Sierras when he was younger, expressed a desire to come with us but is really interested in the hiking/camping above tree-line. This has changed my plans a little because now I am more interested in getting him out and up a trail than finding a deer, per se.

Is there a general area/trail system that will get the old man into some nice areas? Again, I am resigned to walking with a gun and don't care so much about finding animals this year (but will have a gun just in case). We originally had been looking at the OP areas and have scouted a little in the Glacier Peak Area in the past.

Thanks for any info!

What can he do?  How many miles one way can he manage? What's a reasonable # of feet of elevation gain? Most trails are great and I'd bet most anyone old or young can manage them, it's a question of distance and elevation.  Also, how many days are you going to allow for it?  How far off a trail can he manage (brush bust)?  There are places you can be "in" the wilderness in just a few miles.
