What pellets for muzzleloader?
« on: September 12, 2021, 03:52:42 PM »
I recently switched from musket caps to a 209 ignition system. I usually use 2, 50 grain pyrodex pellets with my musket caps. Should I use the pyrodex pellets for the 209 ignition system? Or should I use the Hodgkin triple 7 black powder pellets? The Hodgkin Triple 7 black powder pellets say on the box that they’re specifically for in lines with 209 primers. The pyrodex pellets don’t say that. Does one burn hotter than the other?

If you’re gonna use pellets I would use the triple 7 between the 2

@JakeLand

Why 777 over Pyrodex?

I've been shooting Pyrodex pellets for years, but have picked up some 777 pellets to try.   Haven't shot them yet.
Pyrodex pellets have always worked well for me, but I've heard good things about 777 pellets.

Thanks in advance.

I run blackhorn now but when I used pellets I tried different ones and found the triple 7 shot the most consistent of pellets . But since going to loose powder ( blackhorn) I won’t change its super consistent

Can't run Blackhorn in the Knight Bighorn. I use Pyrodex select in mine. Or real black. Had too many bad experience's with pellets. I do use Blackhorn in my CVA though.

I used Pyrodex pellets and had some misfire issues.   After switching to powder, I'd never go back to pellets.  Pellets burn so dirty.   Blackhorn is obviously the cleanest, but even 777 powder is cleaner than pellets.

Blackhorn needs a special breech plug and a 209 to set it off. The blowback from it in a bighorn could cause eye and head injury's. The Bighorn is a wonderful rifle when using the right powders.

I’d recommend staying away from pellets. In your rifle, 777 ffg loose powder will be the most reliable and cleanest burning.

If you’re set on using pellets use 777 if loose powder still use 777

Yeah this had been discussed on here alot in past threads. I used pellets years ago for a little while when they were new and then went back to loose powder. The ONLY good thing about pellets is they are easier to handle than loose powder charges. They are never consistent. Don't burn fully, and make your gun dirtier quicker than loose powder. It's a sales gimmick if you ask me. They suck.

I've had zero complaints with my 209 muzzleloader using the 50 gr. Pyrodex pellets. They were game changing for me. Never had any issues with them except for the multiple dead deer I needed to cut up and haul out.

I prefer loose powder but if I were to choose a pellet I would choose 777. It creates more velocity and is about 50x easier to clean up after
