23 miles is a long way to haul out a buck if You get one. Trail all the way or not. The farther in you are doesn't guarantee success or that you will see more animals. Have known guys that have taken very nice animals a short distance in but you probably know that. Scouting an area is probably the number one priority. But it's all about the experience.
Our annual High buck trip was quiet too. Not much in the way of shooter bucks, we heard 4 gunshots in 8 days, 3 of which came from our camp, and those were for bears. One was a guys first time big game kill (right)and another guys first bear(left). We had nearly 30hrs of rain and tent time in which we laughed, sipped whiskey and kept the stove hot and ate home made freeze dried meals, chicken Marsala was voted number 1 followed closely by “grandmas chili” and beef stew Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Oh I’m not worried I won’t be heading up there again. I have a closer spot that has been just as good or better. Just really wanted to hike way back in there once. Beautiful area and found some deer so I don’t mind sharing where it was.
