That was bad azz!!! Holy smokes, I think I would have either turned off the camera and shot him or called a warden to see if they could tranquilize the bear.  Those people have guts!!

I remember at one of our rendezvous many years ago Jim Skoggins was giving a demo on coyote trapping. He mentioned catching the occasional non-target cougar. Someone asked Jim, "how do you tranquilize them?" Jim's reply; "with a 30-06". Of course we all had a good laugh.

I think that might have been the option I would have chosen in this "bear in a wolf trap" situation.

I think he went about it wrong. I've not had to release a bear but did a cougar and what was more difficult a full grown cow elk. She was snared by the front foot.
The way I did the cow was I lassoed her. Not easy as I am not a cowboy. Then you need the rope over a stout limb in a tree and pull her up tight. It takes a come-a-long as an elk is too strong for a person to win a tug of war. Once her head was tied up tight to the tree I reached around the tree and cut the snare off her. The you can cut the rope leaving a short piece on her.
She wouldn't leave the catch circle either. Didn't know she was free. Finally ran at her waving my arms and she jumped outside the catch circle and realized she was free and took off.
If you want to get fancy there is a way to rig the lassoes loop so it will open up when you turn loose the rope.

I was hoping you would chime in Bruce this reminded me of the rendezvous story time that I really enjoyed! Ya I can think of a few better ways to do it but no lie I would be very shaken up trying to release a bear cougar or an elk!

Oh I remember that story like it was yesterday.   

Eric Digman released two black bears out of his wolf traps last season over in Idaho.  One adult and one cub with momma bear not to far from the cub.
He had his Grandson with him on one of them and had his Grandson hold on to the rope while Eric released it.
When you see Eric, ask him to tell you that story.
