Got one...sort of....
« on: May 01, 2009, 08:30:07 PM »
Today I went to my spot where I have been after this one bear...I walk in, wind is nice and hard, blowing the right way, making lots of noise.

I move when the wind allows me to, so I dont make such a ruckus...

Check the trail cam...nothing... >:(

Only spot a fresh pile that is basically right on top of where I was sitting a few days back...but nothing super fresh...sigh...

Walk over to the bigger dead swamp and pause for a second...

then here comes the old boy...his head pokes from around a tree (about 60 yards) and he comes broad side, eating away at the fresh shoots...

goes behind a few stumps, back into few...

i check for tits, check for cubs...his neck is nice and long, and he seems pretty tall..ears are farther back...hes the one.

I watch him for a good 5 minutes as I stand motionless, he walks towards me, now about 45-50 yards. Turns broad side and quarters just a hair I put him in the scope, aim behind the shoulder and BOOM!

He spins and bites and the wound then bolts....I can hear him crash for about 5-8 seconds, straight for the freaking brush as they do. Sigh....its just me and it always makes me nervous to go in after them like this. Oh well...thats the fun.

I give him a half hour before I start. Keep in mind, I hear nothing else, no bawling, crashing, nothing. SOunds like he just went in the brush a bit and stopped.

I find a finger sized piece of flesh where he spun, so I know I hit him (plus the way he acted).

I head into the brush where I believe he went...no blood trail to be found..

This reminds me of a sow I shot two years ago, same thing, I knew I hit it, heard it crash...took three hours to find it in the brush...no blood (even with a 4 inch exit wound) until we were right ontop of it.

I search from 2 to 7 pm. No luck....but I am very sure he went down...I will be back in the morning with my brother to hopefully tag and carry out.

Wish me luck. Here is his back paw.

Yeah from my little experience with bears, they don't bleed much, if at all. Great story, must have been really exciting to walk up on him that close and get a shot. Good luck in finding him. How heavy is the brush?

Definately sounds like you got him good. Just remember to go slow and to check all the little nooks and crannies. You know how even the big ones liketo dive into a little spot. Good luck.
