Klickitat Meadows
« on: May 02, 2009, 01:32:46 PM »
So I have been pondering the idea of putting in for the klickitat meadows any Bull tag. I only have a few points so i figure it wouldn't hurt to ask. Has anyone ever hunted this elk area before? There is only 1 permit, but not too many people put in for this tag, and it is fairly close to home for me.

So does anyone know what permit you have to get from the Yakama Nation? I have a REZ permit for birds, but I don't think that is the same permit.

If you have been in this area please tell me what you think of the unit. :hello:

Thanks

Even with the Rez issues the Klickitat was kind of fun till they logged it out the last couple of years and now there is no place for the elk to hide. All of the pockets that held elk are now easily accessible by roads. That gives the native road hunters with the LONG GUN a better chance to GET R DONE. The only thing that tag will give you is access to drive around where you previously couldn't. All you need from the tribe is their rez tag same as hunting and fishing. It was 25 $ but could be more. Also with the permit you get written permission from the logging co. to be on their private ground within the rez. Their is no scouting or camping in advance of your hunt and no camping during your hunt. Non native hunters frequently go into this area from the west side out out of rimrock area as well as from the north side out of the cowiche. Whatever this area was in the past it is has become worse due to the logging. Dont get me wrong, the logging is a good thing cause of the beetle kill which was very extensive. It just opened it up so that the elk have to place to hide.  (so i have been told)   :chuckle:

My buddy got drawn for a Rimrock tag 4 years ago and while we were scouting We ended up there somehow.  Ended up talking to  a guy who was real nice but said we were not supposed to be there so we bailed but I saw some nice bulls. but like Said that was  4 years ago.

No scouting is just one of the rules that go with that unit. Your access is during the permit hunting season only and it in enforced by state game officials not tribal. Tribal will only see that you have a permit from them as well as the letter from the state. Logging will limit your access to some areas. Native hunters of course are exempt from all of these rules . The only thing that you can hope for is a lot of snow which will stop most of the hunters from venturing in from other units. I have seen snow so deep during elk season that even Joe Young couldnt get in or out.... Now that was funny in a sad kind of way...

Hey 270, my dad and I drew for this unit the first year it was open. 2005 I believe. We had muzzle spike/cow tags.  It was before they logged it.  We had to get permision from the logging outfit.  Shawn Monte Timber Co. if I remember right.  I believe their main office is in Idaho. All I had to do was call them, fax them my info and that was it.  A week or two later I received a packet in the mail that had access passes, combinations to the gates, etc. I never did hunt it because I killed a spike on opening day of muzzle season.

I got picked for the Spike or Antlerless tag, I put in because it is close to home, but honestly I don;t know anyhing about it.  The Shawn Montee Timber no longer owns any property over there so I back to square one.  Do you have any info?  I am not asking for a honey hole but any info would help.

The Owner Shawn Montee told me to call Idaho Forest Group for further instructions, I have not done that yet.  A little confused why to call Idaho Forest Group for property in WA  :dunno:, I do know that Shawn Montee Inc. is from Post Fall ID.   The problem I see with the tag is there is no scouting before season opener.  I did thought of renting a small two seat-er plane w/pilot and fly the area for and hour or so  I have to check how much that is..

Probably not worth it to spend the money on a spike or cow tag. If you can get access I wouldn't think it would be too tough to find a nice cow to shoot.

Have you bought your reservation permit yet?

No not yet, I been told I can get it at Bi-Mart or on any gas station in Wapato?  It cost $35 for the year and I can use it for Dove hunting also in September.  You may be right about if it is worth for a cow tag.  Someone told me you can go up in the air for $150 for an 1/2 hour.  I also spend some time on Google Earth but don;t know the boundaries to well.  Do you know anyone having any success in that unit?  I only spend one point so I am not disappointed if wont go there.  I also had planned going way north for opening day in Archery that in a full month before the opener in Klickitat Meadows.

This is an excellent spot for an elk I have hunted this area for years what time of the year is your hunt?
I will get you the name and number of the current owners of the property and there are a few state land sections in the unit. I haven't spent allot of time in that area after they logged it. But there are some good spots that they cant log.

With the Reservation permit you can hunt upland game, waterfowl, bunnies, etc... I always buy mine at Bi-mart. I don't know of anyone hunting this unit recently, but I know in the past some very large elk have been killed up there. There really isn't a definite southern boundary(that I know of). It is basically an imaginary line from reservation creek to coyote rocks I believe. I think it is quite a drive to get up in there, but I have never done it, just looking at the maps.

You could always camp on the Cowiche side and drive over into the other unit if you wanted to camp.

[/quote]Tree Phones is probably the closest campground.  Its basically right on the boundary.  Five or ten minute drive and your hunting.

I have not had any luck with the number, I know the Yakima Nation's Forester and I asked him and he told me that the owner is in Idaho he said he didn't have a number you might take a drive up and see if you can stop a truck they should still be logging not sure, How about the GIS maps online? It might say who the owner is. If you cant get what you need PM me and I will tell you how the get an elk without having to drop all the way to the bottom.

I will try, this is actually my backup plan.  I am hunting opening day NE WA for a big Bull with Outfitter.  If I don't have any success because of weather or who knows what then I will hunt with this tag in mid October to fill my freezer.  Thank you for you help.

Austrian,
