Where can I see a moose near Spokane?
« on: August 15, 2022, 09:36:40 PM »
Not asking for someone’s prize moose area, just want to be able to drive and see a live one near Spokane. I will be here for a few days visiting from Arkansas. My daughter has lived here three years and never seen one. I know nothing about your counties or zones. Please feel free to private message me for tips on seeing one. Hopefully y’all aren’t as tough on out-of-staters (oosers) like some on our Arkansas site. Thanks for your help.

I would call or visit Turnbull NWR, just south of Spokane. They are certainly in there, the staff may know of a place you can pull off and have chance at seeing one.

The IEP land north of Mt. Spokane has a bunch.  Need a permit though.  The Thompson creek drainage SE of Mt Spokane has some too.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

I saw one this weekend over on the little spokane River.  Go check out the hiking trails along the river west of the Kalispel country club.  They are usually in there

Appreciate the tips. I’ll check some of those places out in the next few days. Can someone explain IEP land?

I checked with my friend Google and found out about IEP. How are the roads there?

If you don't mind a little jaunt north of Spokane, look into Parker Lake.

Google it up.   Hard to find a moosier looking area, and there are definitely moose.   Lots of shallow water, so lots of area to see them feeding.

It can be hard to see them in the big woods.

Enjoy!

I hope you see a moose(s).

You can see them if you open up a wolves stomach in the area

If you wanna hike there’s quite a few right in the Spokane valley on the iller creek trail and stevens creek on south side. Problem with this time of year is the heat and moose do not move much in it and are hard to find until fall.

Very early morning and very late evening might work.  The heat is going to make it tough.  As stated, pretty shaded and still when it is this hot.  Come set on my porch, fairly certain deer, moose not likely.

IEP is Inland Empire Paper land.  The roads are mostly pretty good.  You can get a permit at Whites Boots in Spokane and at a convenience store/gas station in Deer Park, don't remember the name.  As others said, it may be hard to see one when it's so warm.  They don't move around too much.  When I had my permit in 2016, I made 5 scouting trips over there between Mid July and mid September and seen a grand total of 2 moose.  It was really hot that year.

:yeah:  I see them often when hiking Iller Creek in the Dishman Hills.  But I tend to go real early.  I had a bull at about 10 yards a month ago, I could hear him ripping leaves of the plants he was feeding on before I saw him.
