KETO Friends - What Is Your Experience With "Net Carbs"?
« on: October 12, 2021, 10:02:37 AM »
I'm not sure I trust a label that says Carbohydrates - 27, Fiber - 21, Net Carbs - 6. Wouldn't consuming those carbs knock you out of ketosis even though the fiber is assisting in efficient digestion? I bought "Keto" tortillas that have this amount and love making myself a big egg and cheese and smoked salmon taco in the morning. But just because it says "keto", doesn't mean it is. There's zero regulation on this. What say you Keto eaters?

Pretty much everything that's labeled and marketed as being keto, really is not. In my opinion anyway.

That's way too many carbs. And I wonder what they consider to be 1 serving? Usually it's a ridiculously small amount.

For myself I simplify it by eating zero carbs.

Try it and find out.  It's pretty common for premade low carb stuff to have high fiber and/or sugar alcohols.  Most of the time it doesn't impact your glucose much but it's somewhat individual and like you said there isn't any regulation or consistency.

Blood meters are super cheap, it's easy to test stuff out especially if you want to eat it on a regular basis.

Fiber is also safer than sugar alcohols, some of the latter definitely do impact glucose but some companies still subtract them.

Good suggestion.

Here's some wraps you could try:

https://www.egglifefoods.com/our-egg-white-wraps/

I'll look into those. Where do you buy them? I get the baked cheese wraps at COSTCO, too. It was just nice to be able to eat a tortilla for a change.

I found eating low carb tortillas drastically slowed my weight loss.   As a substitute, I make egg and cheese waffles and use them as bread for my meals.   It is 💯% amazing and they make for great breakfast sandwiches.

Yeah, we used to make those chaffles all the time. Maybe get back to that. Thanks for the reminder.

I haven't actually tried them yet, just keep hearing about how good they are from some of the people I follow on YouTube.

I do make chaffles occasionally.

I eat nothing made from wheat (or corn) regardless of the amount of carbs or net carbs.

The cheese wraps are good. I use them with eggs and sausage and sautéed chanterelles, chicken thighs and sautéed chanterelles, roast beef...and sautéed chanterelles.  :chuckle: Test them out first to see the difference in heating them in the microwave with cold food v hot food. With hot food, they melt pretty fast, usually in about 20-30 seconds.

A little history about the microwave. My mother's uncle was Percy Spencer. He was a radio microwave scientist at Raytheon during the 40s - the 60s. While he was working on microwave transmission, it is said that a chocolate bar melted in his shirt pocket. He then worked on and developed the magnetron, which concentrates and directs the microwaves for heating food and liquids in a microwave oven. They later named that lab Spencer Laboratory in Waltham, MA. He was working as an employee of Raytheon, so never received any kind of financial benefit from inventing perhaps the most universally-used kitchen appliance other than the refrigerator. They did have the first microwave on the block, however. Interesting stuff.

Eating so called keto processed foods seems to work okay in my experience.  My wife eats the white keto bread sold at Costco. She has a glucose monitor in her arm so she can check glucose levels at any time and eating the keto bread doesn't seem to raise her blood glucose, so it seems like the manufacturer is not lying by claiming it is "keto"......
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

My wife makes a keto bread (very occasionally) from almond flour, eggs, cheese, etc. It's tasty, kind of dense, but especially good toasted with butter or brie cheese.
