Owyhee zone
« on: July 05, 2021, 11:02:14 AM »
It's been awhile since I've been back on this forum and it's surprising how many active members back then have past away. RIP

Just wondering if anyone has ever drawn the 41 bull tag. It's a limited draw so not many have drawn this tag but just curious if you've drawn this tag before, how was your experience.

-Hunting pressure wise
-Amount of recreationists if any (ex. dirt bikers, quad riders, bird watchers :dunno:)
-Amount of elk seen during hunt
-Are elk dispersed all over unit or congregated in certain areas.
-Hold out for trophy bull or shoot first bull you see?
Season is Oct 1-Oct 31

Any info you're willing to share is much appreciated. Or dm if you want to be discreet.

Memo

After 4 days of 80+ degrees of hot weather hunting/scouting, I have deduced:

little to no hunting pressure/recreationists
We are too early in the hunt(migration hunt)
Resident elk are few and far between(needle in the haystack)
Shoot first legal bull

Found where all the hunters are=Must be where all the animals are  :dunno:
Cattle are being pushed off the mountains.
General deer opens =increased hunting pressure and lots of atv activity now
Saw first live elk. 2 decent bulls but too far for a shot and losing light fast

Unit 41

It’s a difficult hunt for someone who hasn’t hunted the unit before. Luckily, the season is long and we have time. Will be sticking it out there till last day if needed   ;)

Lessons learned:
Know where the resident herd of 800+ head of elk is for your choice of bull on opening day before they go onto private.
Don’t expect 300”+ when most big bulls have broken antlers.
Shoot any legal bull after resident herd has left public.

Managed to get one thru patience and perseverance.
