Got a horny young tom hanging out outside the chicken coop trying to get our hen to come out and play.  She finally came out....  He hung around till dark, even went in the coop and ate some pellet food.    He was with a wild hen the day before yesterday, hope she is on a nest today!

Yes, he's an eastern.  And yes, it is very challenging keeping myself from adding him to my grocery list.....  We are putting off short term gratification for long term (hopefully) increase in turkeys near our house.

Oh....and since we're throwing out facts here and for the sake of accuracy, the birds that inhabit any of the islands in the San Juan's are from Eastern game farm stock raised on old WDFW pheasant farms (Whibey Island and others), back in the 60's and released on a couple of the islands.  During that same time frame, but a few years later there was also a small release of wild trapped Merriam's from Klickitat county.

These birds were quite an irritant to WDFW back then and into the late 80s' when at that point they started to ignore them as they were and had been a continual nuisance problem since their release(s).  This contributed to the lack of desire from Region 4 staff to look in a positive light at introductions of wild birds in the 90's, even though there was no basis to believe wild birds would ever do the same.  It was a convenient excuse however that was used to deny new releases.

So what you have in the most part in the San Juan's are Easterns with some Merriam influence.  They are by their nature tame in many respects, and certainly are not the equal of a wild released Eastern in southwest Washington (i.e. Lewis, Cowlitz, Thurston, Mason, Grays Harbor etc. counties), even though they by definition in the turkey regulations they qualify as one based on county of kill.  For what it's worth.........

I love all this turkey species stuff.  I'd have called that one a Merriams by the way it looked.   Good thing I chase deer instead of turkeys.  For th emost part I can tell them apart.

Sorrry!  Just joking around with the pic.....  It is definitely an Eastern, by the way, very tan barring.  Also, I know the guy who released these.  There were no turkeys on my little island until he released Eastern stock birds.

 

And yes, they are not as wary as Capital Forest birds, but we also don't have doofuses chasing them around all year.  They do, however, taste just as good.

Nice pens by the way.   I had a guy out the other day who is obviously an OCD builder.   He looked at my pens and you could tell he was about to explode.  I doubt I have a right angle out there. LOL

Thanks Bone, it is the best buil structure on the property as it is the only one I have built.....

And yes Aneoak, it is a hen turkey.  That is why the boy is there.  She is four years old and provides a huge number of eggs to eat (106 last year).  He bred her two days ago, so the next eggs she lays will be incubated to see what happens.....

He is still hanging out, woke us at 5:52 this morning, oh the horror....

I'd be embarrasses Ross.  I built all the shacks and stuff with free materials.  About the only thing I bought were the nets and wire.  The only good thing about them now is that I have planted pens and the crab apples in them and lilacs are blooming etc.

It was pretty much a joke question.....  Her is an updated photo.  This was yesterday.  Shortly after this photo, a hen and jake wandered through, ate some chicken food and then disappeared again.

As far as counting toward the slam (if harvested), these are no different than other easterns found in proximity to people.  I shot one near Onalaska with the bow about 6 years ago.  These were "wild" birds but roosted on a guy's garage.  His neighbor was quite POed when I bagged the one.  Tasted real good being nicely fed on cracked corn....  He actually trespassed on my friends property and started to take the turkey out of my truck bed, saw the tag and put it back saying "Oh, you tagged it."  To which I replied that's what you do when you legally shoot a turkey....  He left in a huff.  Of course I haven't been invited back, I guess my friend didn't want any more drama.
