Cooke Canyon, Nothing
« on: May 03, 2009, 10:45:22 AM »
Went up to Cooke Canyon outide of kittitas. not one bird anywhere to be seen.
pounded alot of ground both on roads and brush glassing, calling & listening.
Nothing.

we usually see tons of them foraging in the meadows, but thistime around theTurkeys knew Phish had a gun in his hands i guess.

on my inlaws previous trips up there scouting during the week while everyone was at work, he located the roosts in three locations.
went to them yesterday for a look see and nothing.

we sat put calling for awhile in each area with nothing but sore feet to show for it.
Hiking all those hills after not doing it in 25 years is tough on a fat Phish.

I did notice up on cooke can, went way up top.
when going past a large ravine, some white caught my eye so i stopped and took a look.

I thought it was an antler at first, but a glass showed me it was a large rib cage, so i mosied carefully down the bank to it and took a closer look (in case there was antlers lol) heres what i found down there.
It was a total of 5 carcasses, i dont know if they were legal kills or not. but heres the pics anyhow.

didnt have my camera so i used the phone camera

I was in the area this weekend, too, and it was tough.  I'll keep at it, though.  I love to hunt, so perfect for me is to bag 'em on the last day.

I was up Parke Ck weekend before last, there were TONS of birds last i was there...now its quiet as a tomb....saw cat tracks tho in several places and Yote tracks as well.  Several piles of turkey feathers, found NO roosts in the places that they were last fall....makes me wonder.

Also went up top into Colockum and Naneum, roads still partly snowbound (found a Dually Diesel Dodge up there  :dunno: didnt go close to look, Just glassed it...looked like it had been there a while)

was up in the Taneum as well where there WERE turkeys...nothing but shedhunting goons on ATVs..not a gobble to be heard....

Whatta ya mean I can't have one of each?

What we have here is...Washington Department of NO Fish and WATCHABLE Wildlife.

WDFW is going farther and farther backwards....we need FISH AND GAME back!

Just remember that these birds are merriams, and they don't use the same roost like Rios tend to. They travel around a lot, get pressured a lot. They especially don't roost in the same spots in the fall and spring, not here anyway.
