Congrats on your first blacktail!   :IBCOOL:

That's a great looking 2 point. You definitely need to take the shot when you get an opportunity like that, if you don't want to be eating tag soup. With blacktails one chance is often all you'll ever get. At least in my experience.

Persistence and perseverance are a major factor to blacktail success, way to stick it out and hunt that tag hard!

As Bobcat said, that is no simple forkie.  He might have become a 3 or 4 point in time, but that is a mature BT.  Good job, beautiful buck.

Thanks, It was your tip to head north that was very instrumental.

No worries, there is a lot of good ground and vantages points to glass in that section. The southern portion is also good, but with less topography for glassing, using trail cameras becomes more important. Question I have is do you feel like the tag was a "quality experience" that gave you an advantage over the general season? Knowing the difficulties you had now would you apply again how difficult would you rate the hunt overall? Draw tags for blacktail during the rut are a love/hate deal for me, I'm currently building points for mule deer hunts.

That's a tough question.  I certainly wouldn't put it up there with the Mule Deer Quality permits that I have had.  But I also didn't see any rutting behavior.  Maybe if I would of I would think different.  I think it definitely would be a really good Buck Permit.

I will probably apply for it again.  I learned a lot and feel if I had the tag again I could do as well or better.

Physically it wasn't that difficult of a hunt.  Yes, I put in a lot of miles, put they were relatively flat miles on gravel roads.  Mentally it was a tough hunt.  Not seeing many animals and the constant rain wears on you.
