On X Hunt maps no hunting zones
« on: November 06, 2021, 08:33:19 AM »
I have been looking at the onx hunt map over by the Little Pend Oreille Refuge, and there are a whole lot of these red striped 'no hunting zones' on there.  Last year there were a few of them, this year they seem to have grown in number and size.  Does anyone have any 'boots on the ground' info about this? Last year there was nothing on the ground that actually indicated these restrictions that were indicated on the maps.  btw, I am not talking about the permanent no hunt zone around the maintenance/offices area.
Thanks for any info.

Nope, I have found the same as you.  They are there on the maps but no signage etc on the ground that I have ever seen.  I've often wondered too...

Must be a mistake on ONYX's end? If there was a restricted area on department lands I would think they would have signs up. If you didn't have the mapping then you wouldn't know so folks would constantly still go there right? Hunt it!

I know the area you're talking about and for the most part they have No Hunting zones that surround structures (for example the ranger station) and the common campgrounds.  I feel that they are more of a Safety Zone than anything else. It does look like there are more this year than last year.

In my opinion I would not recommend that you hunt an area that you show as a No Hunting Zone on your OnX map.  I just re-read the regs and it clearly states that landowners do not need to post their land. Applying that to this situation: It is the responsibility of the hunter to know the boundaries.

That's fine if you have onx but for those that don't what then ? Sorry but if it is a no hunting area it needs to be posted either by the gov and if private property should either be posted or fenced as most intelligent people understand that a fence could mean private property

I looked at a different refuge and they show red lines also and when I called usfws and got a map of the refuge, sure enough those places were
Closed.

I will guess this lines up with the zones we are seeing, regardless of signage,  pinched from https://www.fws.gov/refuge/Little_Pend_Oreille/visit/rules_and_regulations.html

Firearms

Discharging of firearms is prohibited except when legally hunting. Do not shoot a firearm within one quarter mile of any maintained building or designated campground. The area around McDowell Marsh is closed to hunting to protect visitors using the McDowell Marsh Environmental Education Trail. Loaded rifles and shotguns in a vehicle and target shooting are prohibited. Possession or use of other weapons like cross bows, bows and arrows, air guns, spears or gigs is prohibited unless legally hunting.

The areas I am speaking of are not the ones around the buildings and trailheads and such...those are all well marked on the ground.

I thought they may be burn areas from the summer since they do a lot of controlled burns over there.  May just have to go and look myself.
btw, those spots are not very good hunting anyways so don't bother going there :)

I'd be curious to see a screenshot of your map and which you feel are new "no hunting" zones in LPO.  I just pulled OnX up and I see the same areas I have seen for years with the red lines.  Maybe my map hasn't updated?   :dunno:
