Elk City A tag advice.
« on: December 02, 2021, 03:18:28 PM »
Well yesterday was non resident Idaho elk tag day, and what a day it was.. we ended up getting our second choice tag. For elk city.. would love to hear from you on any advice for archery hunting this unit. Prefer to be pm’d if you have specific info. In trade I can offer good intel from the past 4 years of hunting the lemhi zone which was our 1st choice. Thanks in advance.

Tag zdice ? Save your money , buy a Harley 😂 sorry , that's just where I'm at right now , 63 years old  , and seen the constant decline in reasons not to face the counter of dispare  , license , tags , raffles , discover passes , parking fees , gas , equipment costs , all so we can hopefully see a legal critter , hopefully get a shot , hopefully , hopefully it it's not deseased ,  , or if your real lucky you will come across woolfy , then it's time to head down home , according to elk pro Mr. Carlton , but hey ! Good luck !

Lucky for OP there is still some decent hunting to be had in Idaho, and no discover passes to boot  :chuckle: :chuckle:

I'm not sure the OP realizes how much of an honor it is to have Cryder be the first respondent on this thread.   He is a HuntWA honor guard, as far as I can tell.

I've got the B tag and am going there for the first time.  Love checking out new areas, though there's always a learning curve to a new spot so I don't expect to be super successful.  Good luck getting responses - questions of this type don't tend to get answered

Cryder is right.   Enjoy scouting a new area.  Keep a full tank, only station there can be out and closes at 2 on sundays.   Locals havent heard of an elk taken there in years.  But some are.  Just gotta burn a lotta boot leather.

Beautiful country around Elk City. Enjoy your time there.

All my experience in the area has been focused around trout fishing in the river between Grangeville and Elk City (mostly downstream of Golden) in August and September.  While fishing I've seen lots of trucks with camping gear pulling UTV's heading to and from the Elk City area.  I've never seen any sign of elk in the area.

Practice your wolf howls before you go over, maybe you can tag one of those.

Lots of interesting input, one of my favorite comments is " locals say there are no elk" or " havent seen them in years", this is the exact comments i got when researching for the previous years elk hunting location, and guess what?? a mile from each point we set up camp and parked our trucks we were into elk. That being said i did get contacted by a couple people with excellent advice and boots on the ground experience.  People comment why would anyone give you advice here, nobody has too but i have definetly offered up my knowledge over the past years to certain people and figured there are probably like minded people willing to return the favor.
Thanks to those with good advice and thanks to those with not so good news, all the more motivation.

I've only driven thru the area, but you are right.

Plenty of good people on this forum that will occasionally share without obligation.

Enjoy your hunt.

Buy a wolf tag.   I’m not sure there are any wolves there now either, they tend to go where there is food.
