Chukar in Twisp?
« on: January 17, 2022, 03:09:11 PM »
I found a chukar on my property just south of Twisp.  How common are they in the area?  I have lots of turkey, quail and a few grouse but this is the first chukar I've come across.

Most of your chukar will be south of twisp, but this weather had most birds at the lower elevations. Not uncommon at all.

My property is south of Carlton and I have lots of chuckar around several large conveys during the summer months. I did hunt them with my dog bit of coarse only came across 1 when you want to see them. They love those rock out croppings. If you listen you can hear them communicate to each other once you recognize their sound.

I am just down from Methow and have quite a few on my property. Pretty common down here.

Dont know if you remember but I remember... the time Zeb and I found your camp in the middle of the night south of Carlton and we decided to hunt with you the next day.  After a few hours hiking in the dark the next morning as we were getting to the ridge I saw movement in the draw below us. You glassed down the ridge and told me that it was a cougar... Not that I saw it very well but that was the first cougar I ever saw in the field.

That day was great... 1 doe spotted, a flash of a buck spotted that you went after to never see again and we made a fire up top to warm up before we stared heading down. We Got back to camp in the dark and we were tired    :chuckle:

Yea I remember us heading up the ridge in the dark. If I remember right we saw a group of hunters spread out coming up the valley below. We figured they spooked the cat and never saw it. Funny thing was that cat circled around behind them into the timber. I remember looking down and seeing all the orange pumpkins below us.

Thanks for the replies. If there are more around I'm sure my lab will find them. I had a moose in the pasture last winter and saw a badger on my camera this summer; about the only critter I haven't seen yet is a wolf.  I'm right below McClure so I'm sure they're not too far off.

Be careful what you wish for the wolves work up and down the valley
