Lanai Deer Hunting
« on: November 14, 2021, 07:27:49 PM »
Hi Guys,

So the wife wants to go to Hawaii this next year so I thought I could sneak away for a couple of days while she's at the spa. We're gonna stay on the Big Island.   Anybody have any recommendations for guides on Lanai?  Anything thing I should know before I go? Also how'd you get your meat back home?

Thanks

Dewey

I haven’t done Lanai but did Maui last December. It was guided, not a public land hunt. Different island I know but transporting the meat was easy. Freeze it, buy some cheap coolers, duct tape them shut and put them in checked baggage. I had a taxidermist on the island do a Euro mount and ship it to me when it was finished. Some of the best tasting meat I have ever had.

Thanks,
Rydonn

Axis and fallow deer are hands down to me the best eating venison out there.

I always just buy small coolers or bigger totes if lots of meat and tape them shut and check them. Freeze the meat solid before travel they do not like anything to drip. Triple pack in sealed bags no ice needed on a flight like that if froze solid. Most will only allow dry ice to if long travel is happening.

I haven't hunted the islands but have flown meat home from many states and countries.

Archery/rifle? About what does a guided hunt cost? I would think if a guy can find a pot to boil in you can do the euro work the same day and bring them home with you.

You can do archery or rifle, I did rifle since my wife gave me permission to go for just the one day. We were staying at the resorts at Kaanapali, but someone more ambitious than me could do a Euro if staying at a house or condo. I don’t know the rules for boarding those, but saw on a post on this here forum that when bringing back moose or caribou from Alaska you need to put some type of protective devices over the antler points. Shoot me a PM and I can send you pricing information and the name of the guide service. The guys were super chill, the Owner was a fifth generation islander,  and I had a good time with them.

Thanks,
Rydonn

If you're going on the big Island, book with Nahele Outfitters and do a pig hunt. The pigs eat Mac Nuts, so their flavor is unreal! Also, if you have time call Hula Girl Sportfishing and ask for Captain Stretch and his mate Cole, tell him Matt Frazier from Seattle recommended him. He will show you an amazing day on the Blue! They've been doing great on Shortbill Spearfish, Marlin and other Pelagics!
If I'm not selling, I should be hunting, If I'm not hunting, I should quit!

I have eaten axis deer and it is pretty darn good. Is it pretty easy to bring a rifle to Hawaii? I thought gun laws were pretty strict over there.
