Dog Cut Phez Hunting

Well I went over to the Palouse to give my dad a hand with a deer he shot Friday. He strung it up in a tree 12 feet and hadn't skinned it yet with rain and wind. We pheasant hunted the morning, got it skinned out and bagged and hung up again. All was AOK back to bird hunting.
Sunday morning our pheasant hunt was cut short. Anyone who bird hunts has see all the trash that typically gets piled into the best brushy draws for whatever reason. Well this one was no different, I saw a microwave, cans, washers, etc. I heard my gsp go through what sounded like a pile of glass bottles. Sure enough 10 minutes later he is on point and I see puddles of blood. Carry him to the road since he didn't want to leave the brush and get to the rigs. He is bleeding like a stuck pig all over me. Luckily my father is a semi-retired veterinarian and keeps a kit for just these situations, though usually a porcupine is involved. He had a good gash on his front right paw just above the pads. Set him on a hay bale and knocked him out, debrided and flushed the cut, threw 3 stitches in and bandaged him up. Went and got the deer in the back of the camper and fashioned a crude Elizabethan cone with a feed bucket for the ride back to the west side.

Anyways, I know I'm lucky to get to hunt with a veterinarian most of the time but its a good idea to put together a kit even if you aren't a vet.

-vet wrap
 -gauze
-leather gloves
-clean towels

Holy Moses!!!! That is crazy...glad you were prepared. I take my kit everywhere I go with my dog...even on local walks. Glad he is alright

It cut deep and hit a vessel just below the carpal pad. Hence the bleeding.

Saline in a small bottle and a stapler are also in my kit. Make a plan to be able to carry your dog for a long distance if things go really sideways. Glad it all worked out.

I have been hunting the Yak rez for 30 years and have only had a few sliced pads. Nothing major.  Anybody that has spent time there knows what a trash dump the place is. But quail just love the heaps. Kinda like artificial reefs  for birds. Happy to hear you were able to help your dog pronto. I know mine would bleed out before quitting a point.

I can’t even count the times being able to knock a dog out would have been helpful. Embedded Fish hooks, porcupine incidents, etc.
I had several similar incidents with my shorthair and vizsla hunting on the Palouse. Except most issues where from barbed wire. Luckily none were bleeding like that. And gauze, vet wrap, and tape took care of it. I always told myself I would get a stapler, but never did. Anyone actually used one on there dog without knocking them out first?

I feel like we have gotten pretty lucky so far. Seems to be barbed wire in even the most remote places and, as Metlhead indicated, places on the Yakima rez have every manner of glass, wire, jagged steel. I carry a pretty extensive kit, but severe bleeding with a pack out where the dog can't walk would be problematic. Right up there with a rattlesnake bite.

One of the best things you can do is have a call list of local veterinary clinics on your person or phone for areas you intend to hunt. That way you're not wasting what could be precious minutes Googling when you could be going directly to someone who can help.

That sucks, hunting dogs get beat up so bad. It sucks that so much of it is from the trash people leave behind, dealing with barbed wire fences and porky’s is bad enough. I hope he heals up well!

Salt-n-Sage, I'm really happy to hear that your pooch is ok. Really fortunate to have the trained help in the form of your father with you. Hope he makes a full recovery.

I would also like to find an OTC knockout drug for just this purpose, but I doubt that exists. I would be nervous putting my dog out, anyway. My setter goes berserk with me holding him down to remove cactus spines, vets trying to administer a shot, etc., so I carry a muzzle as part of my medical kit just so I don't get bitten when trying to help him in the field.
I have spent a lot time hunting in remote, steep country for chukar and huns so I often times find myself a long ways from my vehicle. I have thought about buying this carry strap for my pooch and stow it in my vest. Maybe I still will.
