late season Idaho deer, Orofino area. 2022
« on: November 16, 2021, 06:32:31 AM »
Hate to put this on the net, but I haven't been on a late Idaho deer hunt in a few years.  I was wondering a couple things, Do they still give out 2 deer tags (Hate that they did, we need more mature bucks) and is it still a zoo?  Also, We used to be able to camp just about anywhere around headquarters, is that still the same?  Hoping to start a traditional late deer hunt with the new son in law and with friends, I don't want to get over there next year and find out it's all gated like here in wa.  I sure hope ID quit giving out 2 deer tags per person.  PM's would be great.  Need to prepare for the dec 1 opener on tags, I take it you have to call at midnight to get a tag anymore?  Thanks for any info guys.

It depends what unit your planning on hunting whether or not you can get 2 tags still. It sounds like you’re talking about 10a which they’ve reduced to first tag only. With the changes in the regulations concerning nonresident tag quotas it has made it more difficult to get 2 tags because most areas sold out fairly quickly. I’m not sure if they plan on making adjustments to this again in the future or if this is how it’ll be for a while now.

I picked a city that’s kinda in the area, didn’t want to name the real area.

yes, thanks.  So the residents can still get 2 tags and fire away and kill anything that moves?

Residents have only ever been able to get 2 tags if the nonresident quota hadn’t sold out by August. So they could get them at the same time that nonresidents could. Now there is a regulation that you can only hunt 10a with a first tag. So even if you buy two tags only one deer can be harvested in that unit. Surrounding units in that area don’t have that regulation.

My family has hunted that are for years and it is a very quick decline. I hunted it in 2018 and it was tough. We ended up filling all of our tags (three bucks and two does) but it was difficult. I wouldn't spend the money to do it again. I'd rather go after mulies or go to Oregon.
I hunt therefore I am.

For the money it’s tough to justify it from just a hunting stand point. But I love Idaho and chainsaws/public land so I  like to support them.

I saw more elk than deer yesterday in the area and nothing but Oregon, Washington, and California plates. Buddies who work and live in the area say more non residents are hunting then residents right now.

My go to spots along 12 from Orofino up to Lolo Pass are pretty dried up and seen a lot of dead deer this fall.

Also, the season in that unit closes November 20th now. So no more Thanksgiving week trips.

I’m getting a report from my buddy who’s a member here. Sounds dismal at best and they are successful black tail hunters. I sent him exactly where I’ve had great success in the past. I didn’t see much deer in October elk hunting. I thought it might be time of year but was more just trying to be positive. I really have had better luck over thanksgiving too but that’s no more

Potlatch just changed access rules in the Beaver Creek, Scofield Creek and Washington Creek areas.

Looks like a win to me, closed logging roads make for fairly easy walking

I hunted a little ways south of Orofino over thanksgiving weekend, never saw a deer on public in 3 days. Pretty rough, it was my first time in the unit though so I don't have a norm to compare it to.
