So sorry. 14 years is a lot of years. Mine was  that age when the time came. Hunted through her 13th year.
Picked up another about 8 months later. Best friends in the world and no college tuition.
No rush, you will know when time is right. If you need to get out, let me know and we can put something together.
God bless, Jackson.

Maggie was a real beauty. I’m glad you were able to send her off in a gentle and peaceful manner. Rest In Peace Maggie. Brighter days ahead...

Sorry you have to go through this, too cem34.

Back in August I put a deposit on a lab puppy for the spring, but I don’t feel like I want it, anymore.

Maggie looks like a sweet girl and sounds like she had a good run. I put down my chocolate last year and got a puppy in the same timeframe due the spurring/encouraging from my wife. I sure am glad to have another chocolate dude running around with me.  The pup is not the same but he’s special in his own right.

Cheers to good dogs.

Sorry that you're going through this too and the new pup won't be the same as Maggie.  With that being said, I think time will help and getting a new little buddy will be a welcome change in a couple of months.  They are the most loyal friend that I have ever had and I couldn't imagine not having a dog around the house. Austin (my chocolate) was the 4th dog I have put down in the last 20 years and it never gets easier, but the pain from losing my dogs over the years certainly doesn't outweigh all the joy that they have given my family and myself.

We actually picked up another black lab pup in March of 2020 because we knew his time was getting shorter. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in February 2021, so he had a good life and I wasn't going to let him suffer once he started coughing daily.  I'm glad we picked our other lab up looking back on it now as she has made it a lot easier for my kids (6 and 8 )to cope with losing him since he has been there for their entire lives.  Honestly the hardest part about it was watching my 8 year old daughter bawling her eyes out as she said goodbye to him the last time. My wife is still struggling with it as he was one of our "kids" before we had kids, so she is still taking it hard.

It's always tough putting them down as it is hard decision to make, but I knew his time had come and it right thing to do since his quality of life was quickly being erased. It sucks and I miss him like my previous dogs, but its the unfortunate part of being a pet owner.

Thanks for that. I’ll take your advice & not make a decision until spring time when the puppy is ready.
