Ear Protection

Does anyone have experience with any of the sound reducing ear plugs? The kind where you can hear normal conversation  and sounds, but they reduce the noise of shots?

Any recommendations or ones to stay away from? What im.most concerned about is either not being able to hear conversation or birds coming in. Also if they distort sound or make it annoying if theres wind or normal environmental noises.

Last year I purchased the SoundGear Phantom ear protection. There is good and bad things about them. I wanted to use them for big game and bird hunting. No chance I will ever use them big game hunting, 2 reasons. They do distort sound and I don’t trust them like I do my normal hearing and also because they don’t do enough noise cancelling for a magnum caliber.

I do use them bird hunting and they are fine. But like I mentioned before, they do distort the sound a bit.

I have the Walker rope ones. I highly recommend them. The sound quality is not great, but they amplify sound if you want or you can just set them on how you would normally hear things, which is what I do. They completely block out the gunshot. The battery lasts the entire day of hunting

When its on normal sound is it still distorted or can you have normal conversations and hear birds and such?

Not to derail the thread but I was always under the assumption electronic hearing devices were illegal, don't duck hunt much but my brother does and this is what he told me last weekend.. I didn't think it made sense but the sound enhancement is the problem he says?

Can't use electronics to make sounds (other than when permitted), hearing them is fine.

I use them for waterfowl and upland. I love them. They were $50 when I bought them a few years ago. I see they jacked up the price. I just saw a set a Sportsman's Warehouse in store, but I didn't happen to look at the price. Well worth it anyway

Oh easily. You can have a normal conversation and hear birds quacking and flying just as well as you can without hearing protection. It just sounds like you're in a video game kind of, but you forget about it after a few minutes of them being in. It just becomes as if they aren't even in. You can still wear a beanie over them too since they're low profile.

I lost my first pair a few years ago and quickly bought another pair. I don't go hunting or shooting without them. They come with a good case and when I'm done they go in the top pocket of my waders ready for the next hunt after a charging. Same thing when I'm done with the hunt they go back in the top pocket of my waders.

They do mute the high pitch cluck when you're goose calling though. It doesn't mute your duck calling though

Walker Silencers BT 2.0.  They work great on the range and out in the field.  My only problem is it really amplifies the wind also water like streams.  The tendinitis mixed with that drives me bananas. Not a duck hunter though but have used them turkey hunting.  Can hear turkeys like they are right on top of you but muffles my calling.

Now I 'hear' where you are coming from. Joking aside, hit by an Iraqi mortar myself. That ringing will never go away, will only get worse, and is amplified so much in ultra quiet settings. I can only wear ear protection for short periods. Wearing while hunting is out of the question.

I actually where hearing aids now.  Ringing is still there but not amplified and seems like my hearing adds will cut out loud noises.  Used them during and fall turkey hunt and didn't notice the gun shot.  I would absolutely recommend hearing protection during hunting.  Especially ducking hunting.  I did duck hunt when I was a kid back in MN and never wore hearing protection having my brother or friend shooting next to me I am sure is why I have hearing issues now.

The sport ear ones I bought allow me to hear the play in a football huddle from inside my truck. Lol
That said they produce odd amplified sound and block my own elk bugle noise which makes calling difficult.
