There were four of us waiting to get in.  Ended up with numbers from roughly 3000 to 20000.

It didn’t matter when you logged in.  It was legitimately random.

Would you prefer it done this way in the future? In my mind, it could be done a lot cleaner and with less headache if it went to a draw but I don't have any skin in the game since I don't hunt Idaho. More just curious after back to back years of what sounds like a chit show.

I knew you were.  I was pushing back on those questioning.  I had a buddy get below 500 while I was 16k higher.  He got the tag.  I got to watch.  We were both logged in as soon as they let you.

As to future… I hear they are changing to accommodate group apps.  They will charge a fee most likely (draws cost money to run) but you would get to be all or none with your group.  No points being suggested….  I hope they keep it with no points.  Points don’t help anything but revenue.

That would be better.  Right now it's already basically a drawing to get to purchase what you want.

I hope not but I could see this potentially going to a preference points game. There are going to be people who did not get their tags that will complain that they should get first dibs next year. The randomness just makes it another draw. I was at 3700 and got the tag I wanted.

If I were king for a day, it would go to a non points based, completely random draw. Applicants would put their name in a hat and would assigned a random number. Based on those numbers, you would be assigned a day or handful of days to log in and select the tags you want. Given that they do this on December 1, I would think that you could complete this over the course of a month or two and still be done WELL ahead of when the vast majority other states application deadlines are up.

If I where king for a day preference would be given based on how long you've been hunting the state...

Make pool groups for every 5 year's.
30 plus group gets day one.
25-29 day two
And so on...

Bunch of first timers clogging up the system...

I'm not the guy to ask. I plan every hunt as if I was going solo. If people join then great, so the group thing is irrelevant.  Ive also dabbled in 20 or so units in idaho and love exploring new places so if what I want is sold out I'll just pick another. Last year as well as this year weren't stressful at all. Even sitting up around 10k I knew I was gonna get a deer tag somewhere. TONS of good tags to be purchased right at this very second if a guy truly wants to go hunt.

At the end of the day ID doesn't guarantee us a tag or owe us a tag. Their only concerns are selling all NR tags to fund their department. Tweek the sale a bit to lighten the burden on the server but hell no to a draw imo.

One small and easy thing that could be done is to break up the sale dates. Everything on Dec 1 is crazy. Let NR deer go on sale Dec 1. Then Dec 2 sell NR elk. Then Dec 3 let residents in to do whatever it is residents do on the first day they can buy stuff.

I like the way that it is. It will never be the same when I used to be able to get two tags every year. But I would much rather do it this way then I draw.

I’ll be a resident sooner than later so it won’t really matter anyways…

Little bit of sweat and persistence and tags can always be had. Last year I got a deer tag on Dec 1, then tried like hell every return tag sale and finally snagged an elk tag I was interested in during the July sale. Then aug I snagged a second deer tag.  I trained to get tags in idahos system. All auto fill data was inputted. I made dozens of dry runs through the system from log in steps, where things were located on the main page, to checkout steps. I could go through the whole process of buying a tag in under a minute as long as the website somewhat behaved..  Like ammo, gone are the days of casually getting things. A guy can sit around and sulk or he can make something a priority and take the steps to make that priority come to fruition :twocents:
