I’d bet they’ll be changing to something different within the next couple years.

Pretty sure they went up again this year. Will probably go up again next year.

Prices did not go up. Same as last year for me.

I tend to be with Karl and generally roll solo for most deer, the tags I have hunted and hunts i want to do are not the most popular so if someone wants to join they have very good odds of getting tags. I think i only switched units one time early on, so didnt really miss that this year, it seems like the switch to pick a unit and the quotas in those units are at least grounded in some science.

Elk is a different story. Aside from the tweaks to the system itself ( i dont mind it to much other than cluttering time, and would be nice to have some sort of partner/group option if a good solution could be found)..... my heartburn is the huge slashes to all the  healthy units, and the units below objective are where the leftovers are. It seems like a hard turn from science based to money based management.

I meant they went up from 2020 to (this year) 2021. They didn't go up in 2022, but I would fully expect them to go up in 2023 if they sell out again in 2022. Seems like idaho has jumped on the money grab train like all of the other western states. It's sad because the opportunity seemingly keep going down across all western states as the price goes up. Hunting will eventually become a sport only the rich and elite can afford, which makes me sad for the future generations.

There were some elk tags available this morning…

Copy. I have only lived in ID fora few months. I haven’t even begun on starting to figure out how it all works. I have a WA buddy who wanted to hunt deer with me next year. Sounds like he missed the boat.

Depends on the unit, there are still quite a few deer tags left and lots of opportunities for the right hunters.

From what I understand IDFG has to use a waiting room or all the online activity would crash the servers. The problem is that there are probably 40k nonresidents now wanting to buy tags on day one, this is the same reason Idaho had to limit non-residents to one unit, too many non-residents were showing up in certain popular units and it was getting worse every year.

I applaud IDFG for trying to keep tags over the counter rather than going to a draw for all non-residents.

For anyone over 50 or 60 who just gets interested in non-resident hunting, you have little or no chance of ever drawing a decent tag that currently requires 15 points or more in some states, by the time you have that 15 points due to point creep you will need 30 points to draw!

Think about that a little before you wish for that in Idaho!  :twocents:

If they did go to a draw down the road, I would hope there would be no points and it would be purely random. Points have ruined every state that uses them

I would hope they would stick with no points like their controlled drawing. I figure it would be more like drawing a Utah general season tag. Or a Montana general season tag.

I don't mind what they are doing now... besides maybe unit choice for deer...I wish they would of went zones like elk..

If a guy wants to hunt Idaho as of this morning there are still good opportunities for deer and elk...so the system isn't completely broken. It just needs some tweaking...like staggering days for elk, deer, etc...I don't buy an elk tag every year so logging in and waiting with 10k guys trying to buy sawtooth tags when all's I want is deer is a little lame.. :chuckle:

Should be able to at least be able to apply as partners. Shouldn’t have to go out of state solo, unless you want to or have no friends.
