Looking for a South sound (Tacoma etc) offroad shop
« on: December 02, 2021, 08:53:32 AM »
I have a stock 2017 Tacoma Off-Road that is coming up on 100k miles. Stock everything including tires. At 100k I want to replace my suspension and tires and do a moderate lift and tire size upgrade. I am not a great mechanic and value reliability and dependability (IE: not constantly fixing my own mistakes) so I am looking for a quality off-road shop to do the work and help with recommendations. Any suggestions?

These guys have done some great stuff for me. I always see Tacoma's being worked on there.

Bailey's Auto Repair in South Hill has great mechanics and can take care of your needs. They are general repair but shocks and a Tacoma lift isn't rocket science and you don't need an actual offroad shop to do it. They also deal with Discount Tire next door and can get you a better deal. I recommend Discount tires exclusive Goodyear Ultraterrain. It's like a Duratrac on steroids. I'll never buy another all terrain tire.

Why not just go to 4 wheel parts? They sell and install your parts.

Scott’s Quality Brake and Muffler in Bonney Lake is really good with lifts and accessories. They do more than just mufflers and brakes.

I would not recommend 4wheelparts. Check the reviews other than their website and they are not very good for customer service. Their website rules allow them to screen any review not specifically part focused so bad customer service reviews appear to get screened. Ordered a black Friday deal Elocker with free installation and still waiting. Especially dont use the online store. Was charged in November. Part arrived around Christmas but shop in Lynnwood couldn't install and knew nothing about black Friday special. After many calls scheduled install at Tacoma, 40 miles farther away, to arrive and be told the installation kit has not arrived.  When asked to see part , it was still in Lynnwood.  Left constructive feedback to website about not being connected to stores and need for install kit and receive response it is not websites fault, call the store. Then get email request for review of part yet to be installed. Reply and I am told a manager will respond in 2 business days. 2 weeks and nothing. The only proactive step I received was 1 call a week ago from the Tacoma store that the install kit was delayed longer and to check back in 3 weeks. Free install was too good to be true I guess. Will ask to cancel my order and refund me if another problem.
My mistake to trust their website reviews and feel I was dealing with a good company.

I agree, Billy Bobs does a good job. Might have to wait a bit because they’re usually busy.
If you’ve lifted a truck before, I apologize for the story, but if you haven’t, it’s a vicious circle! Lift it, then you need bigger tires plus wheels, then your fuel economy and performance drop, so you add exhaust, maybe cold air intake, still isn’t as good as it was, so you change gearing. . . If you’ve got the money to spend, it’s a fun project!

Particular person at the Tacoma store you work with that is good? Ben there has been proactive.

My experience has been bad but I do blame the online store as the root of most of my ongoing problems.

Been a customer of 4WP for a while.
I have had some suspension and axle work done there.
Also some rims.
Never had a problem that was the result of the employees.
Had some issues with parts being delayed but that was a 'Big Box" store online issue.
Used to use Olympic till they changed hands.

Rear suspension is pretty basic.
I installed new springs and shocks myself in my garage, then removed the third leaf when it was too high (OME Dakar springs).
Front is a different story...Lift with springs, not spacers or perch.
Anyone who knows anything about offroad suspension would not preload springs for looks.
If you go more than 2", be prepared for some driveline vibration.
Let me know and I can help you sort that out.
Good luck.

I had Les Schwab put a leveling kit on my 2018 Tacoma since they do many of them and was quite happy.
