From what I understand IDFG has to use a waiting room or all the online activity would crash the servers. The problem is that there are probably 40k nonresidents now wanting to buy tags on day one, this is the same reason Idaho had to limit non-residents to one unit, too many non-residents were showing up in certain popular units and it was getting worse every year.

I applaud IDFG for trying to keep tags over the counter rather than going to a draw for all non-residents.

For anyone over 50 or 60 who just gets interested in non-resident hunting, you have little or no chance of ever drawing a decent tag that currently requires 15 points or more in some states, by the time you have that 15 points due to point creep you will need 30 points to draw!

Think about that a little before you wish for that in Idaho!  :twocents:
I would hope they would stick with no points like their controlled drawing. I figure it would be more like drawing a Utah general season tag. Or a Montana general season tag.

If and when they go to a draw I hope so too!

I agree with others that there could be some tweeking done to improve the system greatly, one thing I would like to see is that when one guy finally gets in to buy tags, he can purchase for his group, the current system is breaking apart a lot of groups that normally hunt together. I hope we will see improvements over time.

:yeah: It would be pretty simple to allow groups to sign up ahead of time and get in together under 1 randomized number. I don’t like the idea of each guy in a group being able to buy for his whole group as that would favor the groups over the individuals.

Another option for group hunters is just picking a less desirable tag. There’s still plenty of areas that a group could get multiple tags for and still have a good hunt.

You have the group thing now - just look at biggest number and that gives you an idea what you can all get in on.  i.e. someone in your group is gonna be at 13000+ so there won’t be much you all can get but there are some .

One idea is to have a sign up period for those that are planning to buy tags.  Then IDFG emails you your place in line, with a specific time window to log on the next day.   It accomplishes the same thing, and keeps guys from having to stay logged in for hours and wait. It also gives groups advance notice of what they may or may not be able to go together on based on when each guys login time is.  Having a designated login time lets guys mark off their work calendar for 15-30 minutes to complete the process.

Allowing groups to buy all their "OTC" tags at once when the first guy gets in is unfair to others.  That's basically line jumping in the queue.   If IDFG were to do that, they should just make it a controlled draw with application fees and stop pretending it's not a controlled draw process for OTC tags.....then groups can apply together like a normal controlled draw as it is indeed a controlled draw at that point....
