Availability & Price of Powder

 I started shooting Muzzleloaders in the late 80's. I have one rifle & one shotgun/ fowler, both side lock percussion. Powder could be purchased for $6 a pound for Goex 3F. I bought four cans at that time & the day has finally come when I have used up my powder supply. I have moved several times, & now all I am able to find is Black Powder substitutes for $28 - $32 a pound. If I understand correctly Goex is currently discontinued/ out of business, which makes me wonder what the future holds , yes there are a few other makers & substitutes, but all of them not easy to obtain or reasonably priced in my area. Any thoughts from other muzzleloading enthusiasts ?  I have made small batches of self made powder , but do not have ball mill & feel that quality is not equal  to commercial. Seems that I have to use about twice as much homemade powder to get close to goex. Consistancy & reliability are not as good as commercial.

If you are at a store that you think might carry black powder, you will have to ask, they have to keep it in  vaults in the back, I think it  is a federal law  for them  to sell it

 Yes, the Business is very highly regulated, I worked for a powder distributor in College . There were specifics on storage, inventory, & record keeping. Much of the product was stored in bunkers built & formerly used by Army Corps. of Engineers far away from office/ facility

If you are in the NE part of the country try Maine Powder House. Order 5 pounds and have it shipped or drive over and pick it up. They currently show Swiss and Shuetzen powder in several grades in stock. No one knows if Goex will be bought and go back into production.
