Winchester X 150 muzzleloader

I was given a Winchester model X 150 with both .45 cal and 50 cal barrels. Lots of accessories. The 50 cal barrel has the breech plug frozen in place. There are three other breech plugs. two appear 209 compatible the other is for a nipple (several nipples included) are .45 and .50 cal breech plugs interchangeable?

PS the stuck breech plug is slotted. The slot is buggered up as is the plug removal tool. Any tips on removal? currently soaking in Kroil oil.

Try soaking the breech end in a bucket of boiling water for about 15 minutes!  It has worked for me several times back in the old days.

I bought one of these from a member on this site and only have the .45 barrel, but it works awesome and is very accurate. 90 grains of triple 7 shooting 185 grain Barnes copper bullet is very accurate out to 150 yards with open sights

Yes I believe they are but today you can buy a new hex head BP for them.

It is called a Winchester but it is built by CVA!

Check that the gun is unloaded ( remove the barrel from the stock ) and then, after soaking in the kroil or PB penetrating oil, use a propane torch and heat the barrel around the breech plug. This will take a few minutes. Let it cool down till its a little to uncomfortable to touch, then spray more penetrating oil down the bore, just flood it. Let it soak another day. Heat up the barrel around the breech plug again while apply torque with the breech plug removal tool. They usually just pop loose easily, but if its been sitting dirty, im giving you the run down on a nasty stuck breech plug.

i've got some great write ups on how to improve the breech system and actually shoot blackhorn209 out of it. Free floating the barrel is another deal i can help you with. Dont order anything until we talk!

Thank you mountainDevil, The barrel is currently soaking in 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone. In a day or two I will try the heat again and torque again. Soon as I clear this breech plug issue I will be in contact about floating the barrel and improving the breech system.

I got my wife’s grandpas x-150 and really like it.  I don’t have much experience with muzzys but was able to take a bull with it this year which I have wanted to do since it was handed to me.  Good luck with getting it taken apart to get to use it!

I was able to use a Dremel tool with a carbide burr to nibble away at the broken extractor bit that had broken off. Then I was able to drill a larger hole in the breech plug. Using a larger straight style bolt extractor bit and combining force and heat I was able to extract the frozen breech plug. Old machinist tip after applying heat spray the frozen bolt with WD40. The idea being that the heat will pull the WD into the threads. Seemed to work.
