Looks like a bunch of tags will be handed out.
Anyone ever been on one of these culls?
Can out of state people apply?

People get offended at nothing at all. So, speak your mind and be unapologetic.

They run these off the cow calf roster which you would have had to apply in may of 2021 to get on this list. It runs through February 15th of 2022, some times they make an exception to that time line. You get a number on the list, and they call you when it’s your turn to go out. Nonresidents can apply. I was able to harvest a Buffalo off of one of these hunts in 2014. I was number 18 on the list that year. This is roughly the same number they do every year. The article is misleading 95% these will not be taken by a hunter.

Buffalo hunts in MT and WY are pretty tough in that they are very restrictive and you really have to be in the right spot at the right time.  The animals have to move to a spot they generally know they should not be in due to the concentrated hunting over the years.

Animals certainly get killed, but it's tough for someone out of state, particularly DIY as you would never know if the animals are there or not.  Best odds are with an outfitter or someone local that can keep an eye on the herd and know when they step over the boundary.  Some years a couple get killed and other years when the weather is right hunting can be pretty good.

The state could certainly increase the number of animals taken by expanding hunting.  In MT and WY, it would mean hunting in the park which isn't politically viable and would require federal cooperation which won't happen.  There are also some areas outside the park that could be opened as well as private land where the animals are a nuisance.

The tags are very expensive, anyone interested would be well served talking to prior hunters before they jump in.

Hunting has been allowed in Grand Teton NP. Why is Yellowstone different?
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

Not for the WY buffalo hunts, NF and the elk reserve only as far as I know - at least when I hunted it a couple years ago.

For Yellowstone, it would be an optics problem I think.  The two parks are very different in terms of the volume of visitors as well as the perception of the park.  I think access would also be an issue with snow and the unavailability of going offroad with snowmobiles.

The things that come to those who wait, may be the things left by those who got there first!
